Position description
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications from exceptional individuals for a full-time faculty position at the tenure- track Assistant Teaching Professor level, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025 or later. This position is intended for an innovative individual with an enthusiasm for, and breadth of knowledge in, mechanical design and its emerging applications in diverse fields. A successful applicant should be committed to teaching and mentoring undergraduates, to improving the undergraduate mechanical engineering program, and to recruiting talented and diverse high- school graduates in collaboration with other faculty. The ideal candidate will engage, excite, and challenge students in problem solving with a combination of design creativity and engineering analysis. Teaching assignments may include topics from the following list: machine elements, machine design, mechatronics, electronics for mechanical engineers, robotics, design process, design for manufacturing, teamwork, project planning, creative thinking, CAM and CAD. Consequently, the ideal candidate should be interested and experienced in teaching in different educational settings - from small, project-oriented, inquiry-based classes, to larger, more traditional, lecture-oriented classes. The teaching load is 2 courses per quarter with possible load reduction for administrative service. Service will begin with the 2025-26 academic year.
The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through research, teaching, and service. UCSB has been designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) by the US Department of Education.
In 2024-25, a wide array of UC Santa Barbara departments are partnering with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to launch a special faculty recruitment initiative named after Benjamin Banneker, the 18th-century African American mathematician, astronomer, anti-racist, engineer, ecologist, and peace advocate. Funded by an Advancing Faculty Diversity grant from the UC Office of the President, with the goal of diversifying faculty, research, and curriculum in STEM (and related) fields, the Banneker Initiative aims to recruit scholars, scientists, and engineers whose disciplinary and interdisciplinary work would take place within the community of interests exemplified by Banneker's intellectual, ethical, and social commitments as an African American scientist. Applicants may be eligible to be fellows in the Benjamin Banneker Initiative. The community of Banneker Fellows will receive funding for cohort building and professional development activities, including enrollment in the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Faculty Success Program, proposal writing training, and seed grants.
