Systems and Industrial Engineering in the College of Engineering (CoE) is seeking a candidate for a career-track faculty position at the Assistant /Associate Professor of Practice Rank for the Software Engineering program for on-campus, distance and online students.
We seek a candidate who can demonstrate outstanding teaching methods as well as the ability to develop and teach undergraduate courses in a variety of formats (e.g., on-campus, online, interactive video). The program places a high value on collaboration both within the specific degree program and across other engineering disciplines. We seek individuals who bring leadership and a commitment to academic excellence. We are particularly interested in candidates who can work with a diverse student population, stakeholders, and colleagues.
The desired Software Engineering teaching areas include but are not limited to the following: Databases and/or Data Persistence, Operating Systems, Networking, HPC/Distributed Computing, and Software Development Operations (DevOps/DevSecOps); while being familiar with Python, C/C++, Java and/or other programming languages. We are seeking a candidate who will demonstrate curricula development and instruction consistent with the department and college’s purpose, vision, and values.
The Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice, Software Engineering will contribute to building a strong team of culturally diverse faculty and staff who are committed to preparing traditional, post-traditional, and transfer students for success in the 21st-century workforce.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintain a workload typical for a career track faculty within the CoE defined as 80% related to teaching and 20% related to service.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses at multiple sites using a variety of formats, including on campus, online, and interactive video platforms.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues across disciplinary lines.
- Engage students in active learning, encouraging class participation, and provide support in completing class assignments/projects.
- Manage classroom interactions and establish and maintain a climate that encourages learning across multiple delivery platforms.
- Contribute to the service responsibilities of the CoE and the University of Arizona, in part through participation on committees and student mentoring, including those from underrepresented backgrounds.
- Contribute to CoE and the University of Arizona’s development through appropriate outreach to local communities (including government units, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and area residents).
- Assist in the development of innovative approaches to enhancing student engagement, increasing diversity, and expanding collaborations with community and business partners.
- Develop/prepare course syllabi, assignments, and activities for course delivery.
- Prepare and deliver course lectures/workshops.
- Critique and grade student assignments and examinations.
- Participate in advising and mentoring students.
- Maintain regular in-person and virtual office hours and/or be available to students by appointment.
- Additional duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- M.S. degree in the discipline of instruction or a closely related field to the teaching duties expected.
- If candidate’s highest degree attained is a master’s degree in a relevant field, they must also have:
- Significant previous practical experience (e.g., executive in a large company, top executive in a small company, or business owner); OR Eighteen (18) additional units of graduate coursework in engineering or a related field; OR
- Any equivalent combination of other master’s degrees, graduate-level education, teaching experience, and/or practical experience that will bring value to the students’ learning experience as determined by the faculty members on the search committee at the time of hire; OR
- Tested experience to include: professional certifications and achievement in engineering, or a related field, directly relevant to the subjects taught; OR
- Three or more years of relevant work experience (e.g. in private sector) in engineering or a related field; OR
- Current doctoral student with departmental recommendation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated professional experience in innovative teaching methods, specifically in distance modalities.
- Demonstrated professional experience in undergraduate research and applied learning.
- Relevant industry experience.
