Teaching Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Biomedical Engineering

The Department of Biomedical Engineering invites applications for multiple faculty positions with teaching focus. Applicants should have teaching expertise in neural engineering and rehabilitation, bio-MEMS, medical materials, tissue engineering, medical signal and image processing, and/or medical big data analytics. Founded in 2017, the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Shantou University is directly supported by a specially appointed grant from the Li Ka Shing Foundation (LKSF) and has greatly benefited from well-established engineering and medical disciplines which have produced outstanding results in both clinical education and scientific research. The Department of Biomedical Engineering aims to nurture talents who can combine knowledge and practice of engineering, computer technology, and life science. By leveraging international leading biomedical engineering curriculum from the University of Michigan and encouraging engagement in international and domestic collaborative projects, students and faculty are given space to imagine, discuss, practice, and develop. Our students are encouraged to learn and develop through trial and error and rapid iterative processes in our bilingual (English/Chinese) program. The Department of Biomedical Engineering also strives to establish high quality research programs with the aim to improve medical diagnosis and treatment of injury and disease. We have several active research and teaching collaborations with faculty and clinicians at Shantou University Medical College to foster clinical applications and impacts made by our department faculty and students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach a range of undergraduate biomedical engineering courses
- Develop course materials including innovative active learning approaches to student engagement, laboratory manuals, and a variety of students assessments
- Contribute to the department’s teaching mission through peer teaching assessments, development of new curriculum, and comprehensive curriculum development
- Prepare department materials for teaching audits and discipline accreditation
- Serve as academic advisor to undergraduate students
- Supervise senior thesis projects and co-curricular competition projects each academic year
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in biomedical engineering or related field (must be completed prior to start of employment)
- Relevant teaching/lecturing experience at the post-secondary level
- Strong interest in developing biomedical engineering curriculum and implementing a student-centered, active learning approach to biomedical engineering education
- Ability to teach a range of undergraduate courses with specific course assignments subject to faculty expertise and department needs
- Ability to engage students in co-curricular design and senior thesis projects
Preferred Qualifications:
- Research experience with strong record of academic achievement
- Student mentorship and academic advising experience
- Strong interdisciplinary mindset and positive collegial attitude
Compensation and Benefits:
- Annual salary dependent on rank and experience: 250,000-400,000 RMB yearly salary for Teaching Lecturer (Assistant Professor)*

* These positions are contract-based with an initial duration of three years. These positions are renewable based on performance appraisal and mutual agreement. An economically-comparable remuneration package will be provided based on the academic track record and experience.
