About Missouri University of Science and Technology

Institution: Missouri University of Science and Technology
  Rolla, MO

The University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (MSM), the institution that, in 1964, became the University of Missouri-Rolla, and in 2008 became Missouri University of Science and Technology, was founded in 1870 as a land-grant school – the first technological institution west of the Mississippi, and one of the first in the nation. Early curricula were focused on Missouri’s mining industry and its immediate technological needs, but, by the end of the 1920’s, courses of study included mining, civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering and chemistry, metallurgy, mathematics, physics, and geology. Since 1964, the curricula have expanded to encompass the full range of engineering and scientific subjects and the Missouri University of Science and Technology has become a major technological university. Currently the university has over 8,600 students pursuing 99 degree programs in 40 areas of study. But the long traditions of engineering education and research still run strong and account for more than 70% of all the campus activities.
