The College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment to begin August 2023 in the area of Design and Environmental Building Systems.
Illinois Institute of Technology is a private Ph.D.-granting research university with world-renowned programs in engineering, architecture, the sciences, humanities and social sciences, psychology, business, law, and design. Founded in 1890, Illinois Institute of Technology was built on the promise to provide access to higher education for students from all different backgrounds and to make a difference in the world through technology-oriented education. This guiding mission and purpose – where students, including those underrepresented in technology, could prepare for meaningful roles in a changing industrial society and achieve professional and economic advancement – remains just as relevant today. As such, diversity and inclusion are part of the day-to-day experience here and a central component of our culture. Illinois Institute of Technology is home to a diverse and global student population, is committed to providing opportunities to enhance the diversity of its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages applicants from all backgrounds to apply for this position, especially those underrepresented in the field.
The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in the development and application of advanced environmental control technologies for buildings. The candidate should have experience integrating studio-based architectural design teaching with sustainable environmental control systems, building envelope systems and assemblies, and the measurable outcomes of building performance. Additional expertise in life cycle assessment, high performance building technologies that reduce carbon emission, and integrated design practices is welcome. Candidates should exhibit the ability to integrate their research interests or creative and professional work into their teaching.
Teaching for this position will include foundational instruction in environmental technology and building control systems, and advanced courses related to the candidate’s research interests and in support of our programs. The position is aligned with our Master of High Performance Buildings (MHPB) degree, offered jointly by the College of Architecture and Armour College of Engineering’s Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering, a post-professional program for individuals seeking the skills necessary to create technologically innovative sustainable buildings.
The position will help lead the integration of building science across the College’s degree programs (B.Arch., M.Arch, M.S., MHPB and Ph.D.). In addition to their areas of specialization, all candidates should demonstrate an ability to contribute to the intellectual life of a studio-focused architecture school. We will expect active participation in the College and the University through student advising, design reviews, committee service, curricular development, and contributions to College publications and events.
Candidates should have a Masters degree in architecture or another relevant field (or international equivalents). A Ph.D. and/or professional licensure are desirable.
