Post-Doctoral research appointment at the intersection of robotics, tissue engineering, and technology entrepreneurship
Prof. David Hoelzle in the Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Dr. Desmond D’Souza in the Dept. of Thoracic Surgery at the Ohio State University are seeking applicants for the position of post-doctoral researcher. Prof. Hoelzle runs a research lab with a focus on control systems, robotics, and dynamics for manufacturing applications; specific applications include robotic surgery systems for tissue engineering manufacturing, micro- and macro-scale additive manufacturing, and microsystem analysis. Dr. D’Souza is a clinical researcher with expertise in robotic surgery methods and practice.
Duration: 2 year appointment with the potential for a 3rd year with exemplary progress.
Qualifications: PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering, or Computer Science with significant research background in robotics, control, tissue engineering or manufacturing. Applicants with entrepreneurial experience are especially invited to apply. Applicants must have a strong interest in technology entrepreneurship, technology transition, and working with industry. Applicants should be assertive, self-driven researchers who have a strong publication record from their PhD and/or previous post-doctoral positions.
Research activities: Research position is supported by an NSF award to transition a technology from the research lab towards a startup company. The base technology is at the intersection of surgical robotics, tissue engineering, and additive manufacturing. The position is approximately 75% basic research and 25% entrepreneurship and leadership training, including participation in the NSF I-Corps program and local Columbus, OH startup entrepreneurship and leadership programs. The researcher will also work closely with industrial partner Intuitive Surgical.
Compensation: $50,000 per year with university benefits and annual raises. Researcher will have a joint position in the Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Dept. of Surgery.
