Applications are invited for a Lecturer (full-time teaching faculty) in the Biomedical Engineering (BME)
Design Program at the University of Michigan. The successful candidate will be part of a dedicated
teaching team focused on experiential learning, engineering design, and professional development of
biomedical engineers.


The BME Department at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (bme.umich.edu) is a joint department
between the College of Engineering and the Medical School. It harnesses intellectual and physical
resources from across campus to create a world-class learning environment. Applications from
individuals in all areas of biomedical engineering and related disciplines will be considered, and we seek
candidates who can contribute to our educational mission in the following ways:
• provide instruction and support in the undergraduate and graduate BME Design programs
• contribute to hands-on and other experiential teaching
• enjoy working with student teams


We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
• Mechanical design and testing
• Computational modeling, simulation, and software
• Biomedical instrumentation
• Product development under design control
• Prototyping, assembly, manufacturing


The main responsibilities of this position are:
• Teaching of biomedical engineering courses, with an emphasis on engineering fundamentals,
instrumentation, and design. Teaching load is expected to be up to 4 courses per academic year, and
course assignments will depend on expertise and interest.
• Instruction and mentorship of student teams in design-build-test experiences. Projects address
unmet clinical needs by developing new medical devices, combination products, and other healthcare
technologies.
• Contribution to curricular development and continuous improvement of the BME Design program
through departmental service and professional development.


Applicants should have a PhD in engineering or the physical sciences, or a BS/MS degree with significant
and relevant industry experience. Desired qualifications include a demonstrated commitment to teaching
and education, as well as a strong motivation to improve the educational experience and engage students
in experiential learning. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute through their
teaching and service to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
