Postdoctoral researcher in innovation practices and learning

The Aalto Design Factory ( is looking to hire a postdoctoral researcher to join our multidisciplinary platform in Aalto University School of Engineering.

Aalto Design Factory seeks to reimagine how research, teaching and development come together for effective co-creation. With a development-oriented local community and a network of 34 sister platforms around the world, the Design Factory offers a hub for collaborative innovation activities and experimentation. We are opening a one-year position in the Design Factory research team, with possible extension.

We have an active research team that focuses on the human side of innovation - perceptions, practices and behaviors, bringing together an array of different disciplines ranging from engineering and design to management, sociology and organizational psychology. Most of our research is qualitative, interview-based work, and the team has existing data sets of hundreds of interviews on the innovation activities of designers, engineers, entrepreneurs and students.

The team currently has three main streams of active research examining
  • the development of innovation capabilities and effective creative practices in higher education and industry
  • how designers and engineers can advance sustainability efforts in different types of organizations, and
  • how interactions with different types of stakeholders can contribute to effective new product development and design thinking practices in organizations

More information can be found also at

The ideal candidate, with a relevant doctoral degree, is interested in contributing to all three streams of research and has a track record of previous research relevant to one or more of these areas. We work in a collaborative manner, and as a postdoctoral researcher, we hope you contribute to the team actively both through leading research (building on synergy between your core capabilities and current projects of the team), as well as through acting as an instructor and co-author with our PhD researchers.

We expect a track record of successful publishing in academic journals. Some experience with qualitative data collection and analysis is preferred, with expertise in, for example, critical incidents, multiple case studies, and thematic, narrative, or discourse analysis being helpful for an efficient start in the current operations of the team. However, any methodological expertise is relevant coupled with a proactive stance to data collection, as we are looking to expand the capabilities of the team. As we seek opportunities to combine research, teaching and development, experience in all three pillars of academia is considered as merits for the position. Our team leverages diverse interests and skills, including for example photography, graphic design and podcasting in our development efforts - we can’t wait to see what you bring into the mix!

Our working and publishing language is English, so the position requires good command of English. Proficiency in other languages is considered a benefit, but neither Finnish nor Swedish are required for the position.

How to apply
To apply for the position, please submit your application including the attachments mentioned below as one single PDF document in English through our online recruitment system by using the "Apply" link on Aalto University’s web page.
  • A 2 page letter of motivation, outlining how you see yourself contributing to 1-3 of the research streams listed above and to the Design Factory community
  • A CV, outlining your education and work experience, including teaching and grants
  • A publication list, with three key publications highlighted
  • A copy of doctoral degree certificate and its translation, if the original is not in Finnish, Swedish or English

Please note: Aalto University’s employees and visitors should apply for the position via our internal system Workday -> find jobs (not external webpage on open positions) by using their existing Workday user account.

The deadline for applications is Dec 4th, 2021, however, we will be reviewing applications starting Nov 22nd, 2021. Selected candidates will be invited to respond to a short video interview, after which short-listed candidates will be interviewed between Dec 8th and 13th, 2021. We seek to fill the position as soon as possible, but starting dates are negotiable.

Aalto University reserves the right for justified reasons to leave the position open, to extend the application period and to consider also candidates who have not submitted applications during the application period.
