Research Associate (Maritime Energy and Sustainability)

Launched in October 2017, the Maritime Energy & Sustainable Development Centre of Excellence (MESD CoE) is jointly funded by Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). As the first maritime research centre supported by SMI, MESD has the mission to deepen Singapore’s maritime R&D capability and Maritime Singapore’s position as a global maritime knowledge and innovation hub to support Singapore’s strategic maritime needs. With the focus on green port and shipping, MESD works closely with key stakeholders within the maritime cluster to develop innovative and sustainable solutions.

We are looking for a Research Associate to conduct research and development projects in low carbon shipping and ports. The role will focus on translational research that bridges academic innovation and industry application, contributing to scientific advancement while working closely with maritime stakeholders to co-develop and implement low-carbon solutions addressing real-world challenges in the maritime sector.
Key Responsibilities:

Conduct research in maritime energy, including alternative fuels (e.g., biofuel, ammonia, methanol) and electrification pathways.

Collect, analyse, and model data related to shipping operations, emissions, and energy consumption.

Prepare progress reports, technical papers, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

Contribute to business development activities, including proposal writing and securing research funding.

Drive translational research outcomes, including preparation of Technology Disclosures, intellectual property (IP) filings, and support for technology deployment with industry partners.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

Master’s degree with strong academic results in Marine Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

At least 1 year of relevant experience in energy research or hands-on technical work related to shipping, ports, or maritime energy systems.
Skills and Competencies:
-
Good understanding of shipping, port operations, energy systems, and greenhouse gas (GHG) management.

Strong data analysis and modeling skills.

Proficiency in information visualisation and presentation.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English - essential for data analysis and communication with stakeholders

Self-motivated, research-oriented, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Capable of performing under pressure and meeting tight deadlines.

Effective team player with good problem-solving and multitasking abilities.

A strong publication record and experience in industry R&D projects will be an advantage.
