The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Akron seeks an accomplished academic and administrative leader as the Chair of the Department. The ECE Chair will report to the Dean of the College of Engineering and Polymer Science (CEPS) and will work closely with the University leadership.


In addition to required Departmental Chair responsibilities typical within the College of Engineering and Polymer Science, the following are highlighted expectations for this position:

  • Be a champion for the department (including faculty, staff, and students) within the college, within the university, and within the larger electrical and computer engineering and related communities, both domestic and international.
  • Promote departmental research to the broader community to improve visibility of the programs at the local, regional, and national level.
  • Organize regular (at least annual) strategic planning sessions within the department with actionable items and timelines.
  • Provide direct oversight to departmental curriculum issues, at the graduate and undergraduate level.
  • Grow enrollment for all degree programs offered by the department, sensitive to available resources and in conjunction with college and university strategic plans.
  • Explore new certificate, minors or degree programs related to the activities within the department and the needs of the region.
  • Develop new approaches to generate revenue for the benefit of the department, college, and university.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants should have an earned doctorate in Electrical and Computer Engineering or a closely-related field; academic rank of tenured Associate Professor or higher; a commitment to diversity and inclusion; an impeccable record of integrity with strong commitment to high ethical standards; a balanced perspective on research, teaching, and service; demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to build consensus, the ability to make decisions, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment; excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Successful candidates must qualify for the rank of tenured Associate Professor or higher at The University of Akron.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants who have a demonstrated ability to lead a faculty group representing a diverse range of interests; a strong record of scholarly activities in the candidate’s field; a demonstrated commitment to building a high-quality learning environment for students – both undergraduate and graduate; a demonstrated ability to identify and nurture excellence within the department, which includes the ability to recruit, develop, and retain first-rate faculty members; and strong financial management skills, including the ability to manage departmental finances and to align academic priorities with short- and long-term budget planning.

About the department

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is one of the eight units in the College of Engineering and Polymer Science (CEPS). It offers six programs: B.S. in Electrical Engineering, B.S. in Computer Engineering, A.A.S, B.S. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology, M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Ph.D. in Engineering. The B.S. programs are ABET-accredited. Over 500 students are currently enrolled in the department’s programs. Members of the ECE faculty pursue diverse lines of research: electric machinery and power, sensors, electromagnetics, control systems, communication, microwave and millimeter-wave devices, nanostructured materials, networked embedded systems, computer systems, and more. The faculty have active collaborations within the university, as well as with colleagues in the US and worldwide. Faculty research has been supported by funding from the NSF, DoD, Wright Center for Sensor Systems Engineering, a variety of other funding agencies, and industry.
