ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (Geotechnical Engineering), position number 83019, University of Hawai’i at Manoa, College of Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, invites applications for a full-time, general fund, tenure track, faculty position, pending position clearance and availability of funds to begin approximately August 1, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The University of Hawai’i is a Carnegie doctorate granting university with a strong emphasis on research and graduate education. The Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, and its undergraduate program is ABET accredited. Duties: To teach undergraduate and graduate courses in geotechnical engineering and related civil engineering courses. The new faculty is expected to contribute to advancing the state-of-the-art in geotechnical engineering. Teach via various distance delivery modes as required and serve on departmental, college, and university committees. Develop an externally funded research program that leads to publication in leading scholarly journals. The successful candidate will have access to a well-equipped geotechnical testing laboratory, along with associated machine shop facilities. Available computer facilities are extensive, including access to the Maui High-Performance Computing Center and state-of-the-art multimedia computer instructional laboratories. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with a variety of faculty from other colleges such as the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, etc. Related areas of potential cooperation include soil science, geology, hydrology, ocean processes, etc.

Minimum qualifications: An earned Ph.D. (All but dissertation, ABD, will be considered; degree must be earned before the date of hire) in civil engineering, geology/geophysics, or a closely related discipline from a university of recognized standing by the start date of the position, and expertise in an emerging research area related to geotechnical engineering. Candidates also must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates must be qualified to teach graduate courses in his or her area, as well as undergraduate courses in civil engineering. Candidates must demonstrate scholarly achievement evidenced by a track record of conducting research, and publishing scholarly materials. Candidates must have excellent communication skills for meeting and conferring with others.

Desirable Qualifications:
1. Strong research record in geotechnical engineering, and related areas.
2. Ideal candidates in the primary search area will have research interests including but not limited to resiliency and/or sustainability in geotechnical engineering, coastal geotechnics, and other emerging areas.
3. Quality of research thus far is an important consideration, as is potential for establishing an extramurally funded research program.

Pay range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
