The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville invites applications for tenure-track Assistant-Professor positions: one in the general area of Aerospace Engineering and one in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on thermal science and energy systems. Applicants should have an earned Ph.D. degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a related field. We seek candidates who can inspire and lead funded research scholarship, enable student success at both the undergraduate and graduate levels through teaching and mentoring, and contribute proactively to university and professional service while contributing to the diversity of the UAH academic community.

The University of Alabama in Huntsville, classified as a Higher Research Activity institution, offers academic and research programs in the Colleges of Nursing, Business, Engineering, Science, Education, Professional and Continuing Studies and Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences. Huntsville maintains one of the highest per capita incomes and standards of living in the Southeast. It is a national center of aerospace and high technology research. The Huntsville area is also home to more than 50 Fortune 500 companies, the Hudson Alpha Institute for Biotechnology, and several federal research facilities including NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the Army’s Missile Defense Agency, Material Command, Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center, and Space and Missile Defense Command. New manufacturing facilities include those owned by Blue Origin, GE Aviation, Toyota, and Mazda.

The College of Engineering is comprised of five departments and has the largest enrollment of the university’s five academic colleges. The College enrolls 35% of UAH’s undergraduates in ABET‐accredited programs in aerospace, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, industrial and systems, and mechanical engineering.

The Department offers BS degrees in Mechanical Engineering and in Aerospace Engineering, and an MS and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Systems Engineering. Our faculty is comprised of 20 tenure-track/tenured members and 5 full-time lecturers. Our undergraduate student body is comprised of 743 aerospace engineering students and 667 mechanical engineering students. We have 174 graduate students in both disciplines. Our faculty’s research interests include materials for aerospace applications and for energy storage, gas turbine heat transfer, electrochemical energy conversion and storage, design and control of unmanned systems, applications of smart materials, and computational fluid dynamics applied to low-speed combustion and fire applications, fluid-structure interactions, and high-speed aerodynamics. In addition to its nationally known educational and research activities in rocket propulsion, the Department is engaged in a wide range of research activities currently funded by NSF, DOD, NASA, DOE, USDA, the State of Alabama, and several corporate sponsors.
