Position title: Assistant Professor in Bioengineering

Salary range: The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment; see table. The salary range for this position is $103,700 - $129,600. Off-scale salaries and other components of pay (i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step) are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: July 1, 2025

Position description

The University of California, Merced, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Bioengineering in the areas of prosthetics, bionics, regenerative medicine, or biomedical devices, broadly defined. This position is anticipated to start on July 1, 2025. We seek innovative and collaborative candidates who are committed to excellence in research, teaching, and service.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop a robust, independent research program in the areas of prosthetics, bionics, regenerative medicine, or biomedical devices.
  • Publish high-quality research in peer-reviewed journals and secure external funding to support research activities.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in bioengineering, contributing to curriculum development and student mentorship.
  • Collaborate with faculty across disciplines, industry partners, and healthcare professionals to enhance research and educational initiatives.
  • Participate in departmental, university, and community service activities.

Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated research expertise in prosthetics, bionics, regenerative medicine, or biomedical devices.
  • A strong publication record and potential for obtaining external funding.
  • Evidence of effective teaching and mentorship at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in interdisciplinary research and collaboration.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and practices.
  • Ability to engage with diverse student populations and promote inclusivity in the learning environment.

Basic qualifications include:
  • A Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • Demonstrated research expertise in prosthetics, bionics, regenerative medicine, or biomedical devices is expected.
  • A strong publication record and the potential for obtaining external funding are essential.
  • Evidence of effective teaching and mentorship at the undergraduate or graduate level is also required.

All but dissertation (ABD) candidates will be considered but must complete their Ph.D. by the start date.

Preferred qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:
  • Experience in interdisciplinary research and collaboration.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and practices.
