The Faculty of Engineering is inviting applications from qualified mid-career academics for a biomedical engineering research stream Faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor. In addition to regular academic responsibilities, the successful candidate will also assume the role of Program Director for the Biomedical Engineering undergraduate program for a three-year renewable term.
This accredited BEng degree program is shared between the Department of Mechanical Engineering (MECH) and the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE). This tenured position will reside within the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The position is open to researchers in any field of biomedical engineering or bioengineering. Eligible candidates must:
- hold a PhD in biomedical, mechanical, electrical engineering or a similar field;
- be registered as a Professional Engineer, or be eligible for and committed to registration;
- have demonstrated experience collaborating with industry;
- be committed to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and actively participating in the academic operations of the Department;
- have excellent verbal and written communication skills; and
- have a track record of: leading academic teams, research experience, securing research funding, and creating inclusive learning environments that encourage a diversity of perspectives and insights.
In collaboration with the Dean and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, the Chair of Mechanical Engineering and the Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Program Director will: 1) provide inspiring academic leadership for the educational mission of the Biomedical Engineering Program; 2) ensure the curriculum of the Biomedical Engineering Program meets the program’s goals, strategic plan and accreditation needs; 3) enable and develop synergies between the biomedical engineering curriculum and research programs; 4) provide vision and strategic directions for the program; 5) manage and coordinate the program’s human and fiscal resources; 6) represent the program and its students within the University of Victoria, as well as to provincial and federal agencies, key industry groups, partners and collaborators. The expected start date for this position is January 1, 2026.
The successful candidate will join a decorated team of Faculty in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering that advance innovation in tissue engineering, biomechanics, biosensing, micro- and nano-technologies, materials for biomedical devices, assistive technologies, and protective and surgical devices. Biomedical engineering is an important component of the Health research and teaching ecosystem at UVic. Biomedical engineering faculty collaborate with researchers and educators throughout UVic’s new Faculty of Health and support clinical and broader healthcare breakthroughs using transformative technology. Biomedical and bio engineering research at UVic has been repeatedly recognized by provincial, national and international organizations and societies. Our faculty are also locally engaged - they champion and nurture cross-sector partnerships with a rapidly growing bio-tech sector in British Columbia, including clinicians, surgeons and other health practitioners. In 2026 a new UVic Engineering and Computer Science building will expand our facilities for biomedical teaching and research activities. This includes 370 m2 of additional Bio-Safety Level 2 labs, teaching labs, and grad student office and collaborative spaces

Our Biomedical BEng Program was established in 2012 and was the first of its kind in Western Canada. It is currently accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. The program currently has approximately 125 students enrolled at the undergraduate level. The program has a mandatory co-op experience and attracts highly motivated students. Many of our students are actively engaged in research led by the program’s faculty through volunteer, co-op and in-course project opportunities, which leads to a research engaged learning environment. The candidate’s qualifications, experience, overall market demand and rank will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. Industry experience is considered an asset. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $138,000 - $170,000 at the Associate Professor rank or $168,000 - $207,000 at the Professor rank.
