Teach and provide laboratory resource support for BME 22200 Biomeasurements, BME 24100 Biomechanics, BME 38300 Problems in Implantable Materials and Biological Response, and BME 35400 Problems in Cell/Tissue Behavior and Properties. In the case of BME 22200, Biomeasurements, teaching will include the entire summer version of the course as well as the laboratory section. Teach the weekly laboratory portion of these courses in their respective Fall or Spring semesters. Ensure lab manuals, assignment handouts, and other resources are accurate and up-to-date. Develop new laboratory training materials as needed. Grade lab reports (22200 and 24100) and evaluate student performance for accreditation agencies and for implementing the department’s Continuous Improvement Plan. Ensure any materials or equipment needed for laboratory assignments (e.g. oscilloscopes, mechanical testers, circuit components, and chemical solutions) are stocked and operational. Provide safety training for all students and teaching assistants relevant to the respective lab sections. Supervise, train, and coordinate activities (e.g. homework grading, lab assistance) of teaching assistants/graders assigned to these courses.

Assist undergraduates with laboratory, equipment, and supply needs related to senior design (BME 49100/49200) and other student projects (BME 49600/69600). Operate certain off-limits equipment for students and provide instruction on the safe operation for test equipment that are used for classroom demonstration or student projects.

Develop and maintain a database of cost-effective sources for consumable laboratory supplies. Order, procure and proof proper payment of materials, supplies and equipment for labs and classrooms on a timely basis. Complete miscellaneous paperwork in terms of filing reports, performing inventory of laboratories and related equipment, ordering materials and equipment on requisition sheets, preparing paperwork for auctioning surplus equipment. Prepare all materials, specimens, samples, equipment, and devices needed for laboratory instructions.

Design and implement a preventive maintenance program that will keep equipment ready for classroom and research project use. Analyze new equipment as it comes to market for possible implementation and keep abreast of new processes used in industry to sustain a state-of-the art laboratory.

Collaborate with other faculty and administration to schedule and support academic, research and outreach activities in laboratories. Assign teaching assistants and coordinate their office hour schedules. Assist with minor maintenance needs (e.g. moving furniture, changing projector lightbulbs) in BME labs and offices. Keep research lab PIs aware of building shutdown notices.

Work with CNC/UITS to ensure that all necessary computer software and hardware (including printers) for the BME teaching labs is up-to-date and operational.
Manage the process of programming door locks and granting laboratory key-card access for BME labs.
