POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE
New York University Tandon School of Engineering
The Dynamical Systems Laboratory at NYU Tandon School of Engineering is seeking to hire a Post Doctoral Associate to work the mechanics of deep-sea sponges. We seek independent, motivated, and creative individuals interested in experimental, theoretical, and computational research. This position is fully funded with a competitive salary.
The DSL was established almost twenty years ago by Prof. Maurizio Porfiri (Institute Professor at Tandon School of Engineering and Director of the Center for Urban Science and Progress, with appointments at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, the Department of Civil and Urban Engineering, and the Center for Urban Science and Progress).
The DSL is home to a highly collaborative, vibrant group of young scholars with complementary expertise across theory, experiments, and computations. The director, Prof. Porfiri, is the author of more than 400 journal publications and the recipient of numerous professional awards (Wikipedia/Maurizio_Porfiri).
New York University (NYU) is one of the top private universities in the United States, and the Tandon School of Engineering, located in Brooklyn, NY, is deeply committed to excellence in teaching and learning. Tandon fosters student and faculty innovation and entrepreneurship that make a difference in the world.
Expectations:
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading experimental and theoretical research to examine the mechanical response of deep sea sponges living in groups. The candidate is expected to: i) lead the design and creation of an experimental setup to examine fluid-structure interactions between 3D-printed models of deep sea sponges and ii) lead the formulation and analysis of finite-element, as well as mathematically tractable structural models. As appropriate, the candidate will be responsible for mentoring undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, coordinating outreach activities, and supporting proposal writing and grantsmanship. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated background in experimental mechanics, fluid mechanics, fluid-structure interactions, and solid mechanics; as exemplified by a strong publication record.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or closely related fields. Previous research experience in biological systems is a plus. We welcome applicants with recent PhDs and individuals seeking additional postdoctoral training. Candidates will be required to present eligibility to work in the United States.
