The Department of Computer Science (CS) and the College of Engineering at The University of Alabama invite applications for multiple tenure-track and tenured faculty positions at all ranks, including Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor levels, within the department. Candidates applying to this particular posting should be intending to apply for a position at the rank of Associate Professor and have research interests in the general areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and/or closely related areas.  Applications from candidates with appropriate experience and a strong record of scholarly productivity and impact who would seek appointment at the rank of Full Professor are also encouraged to apply through related postings. Candidates from under-represented groups in engineering and computer science are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants should apply online at https://careers.ua.edu/jobs/search/college-of-engineering.

Candidates with prestigious achievements in their field and exceptional national and international reputations will be eligible for consideration for significant endowment support through appointment as an Endowed Shelby Distinguished Associate Professor (https://provost.ua.edu/shelby-endowment/).

While candidates with research interests across all domains relevant to computer science are encouraged to apply one of the ongoing faculty searches in the department, candidates with particular research emphasis and interests in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and/or data science are of particular interest for one or more of the positions this year and are strongly encouraged to apply through this particular posting if the candidate is seeking appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.  The CS department and College are looking to both: (1) add faculty who will build upon existing strengths in the Department, College, and University and (2) add faculty who will expand the scope of research here within the Department, College, and UA as a whole.  (https://cs.ua.edu/).

The newly created Alabama Center for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (ALA-AI) at the University of Alabama will provide exceptional opportunities for faculty and students to engage in advanced AI research and education, fostering innovation and academic excellence in the area of AI and its many applications across campus.   A project to build a new and next generation of high performance computing (HPC) data center is also underway at UA and will provide the infrastructure and instrumentation to support cutting-edge computational research for many years to come.

The CS department and College consider teaching, research, and service as the three critical and complimentary portions of their overall mission. Candidates must demonstrate a clear potential to successfully develop, lead, mentor, and extramurally fund a highly productive research group with significant scholarly impact in a focus area with long term potential to further build upon the rapid rise and great success of the CS department and the College.  An ability to collaborate with existing faculty in the key focus areas both within the CCEE department and the College, as well as potential colleagues across the campus, is also highly desirable.

The department, college and university are also notable for the collegial, welcoming and supportive spirit built into the fabric of who we are and how we interact across our College family of students, faculty, and staff.  It is therefore expected that candidates demonstrate an ability to support this important aspect of our community.  The CS department and College also pride themselves on the outstanding educational experience provided to their students, and thus faculty candidates must demonstrate an ability to develop and teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the faculty member’s area(s) of expertise as well as to teach courses that support the delivery and accreditation of the CS department’s core degree programs.

At the undergraduate level, the department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Computer Science and Cyber Security, with undergraduate student enrollments in the department consistently being maintained at approximately 1000 students.  The department also offers minors in computer science and computing technology and applications.  At the graduate level, the department offers the Master of Science in Computer Science and the Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science, and graduate enrollments in the department are currently on the order of 100 students and growing quickly as the research programs in the department continue to rapidly grow.

Appointments to the faculty of The University of Alabama are based on the personnel requirements of the University’s academic programs and on the goal of achieving and maintaining excellence in its teaching, research, and service/academic citizenship activities.

Visit UA's employment website at careers.ua.edu for more information and to apply. Requisition will be posted until filled, with an expected start date of August 16, 2025.
