The University at Buffalo (UB) Center for Computational Research ( and the newly formed UB Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) has openings for a Computational/Data Scientist (data scientist/analyst). This position collaborates with experts from both within the university as well as external entities, to develop and deliver training modules in the area of computational and data science which help enable ICDS/CCR’s mission to provide educational and research training in addition to fostering economic development in the region. The ideal candidate will have broad software engineering skills with experience in the design and development of computer based statistical and numerical models and visualization of results. Experience with Unix command line tools, high performance computing, and data warehousing and analysis expertise using relational and non-relational technologies is also desirable.

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University at Buffalo is the largest and most comprehensive of the SUNY engineering schools.

Position Type: Faculty

Salary range of the position is $60,000 – $90,000.

Minimum Qualifications: MS degree in applied mathematics, computer science, engineering or a scientific discipline is required. Demonstrated experience in the development of numerical and statistical models, numerical simulations, software engineering and/or programming is required. Strong numerical and statistical modeling and data analytic background with R or equivalent, programming skills using languages such as PHP, JavaScript, Python, C/C++, SQL, and Perl in a Unix/Linux command line computing environment.

Preferred Qualifications: PhD degree in applied mathematics, computer science, engineering or a scientific discipline is preferred. Exposure to parallel computing and programming with standard tools like MPI. Development of software in a Unix/Linux computing environment and experience with data warehousing/analysis technologies is highly desirable. Machine learning experience and experience in processing and analyzing large data sets of data using relational and non-relational technologies is also highly desirable.
