This position will support research and teaching in the general area of Geomatics. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: advanced geospatial science (e.g., global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), geodesy, photogrammetry, terrestrial laser scanning, airborne or satellite LiDAR, radar altimetry, GIS, geovisualization, and geospatial analytics) with a civil engineering application(s) (e.g. natural hazards, infrastructure resilience, asset management, smart cities, transportation, hydrology, coastal, construction, and/or property surveying).
The successful candidate will have access to a dedicated surveying room, along with associated machine shop facilities. Available computer facilities are extensive, including access to the Maui High-Performance Computing Center and state-of-the-art multimedia computer instructional laboratories.
The CECE Department is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research and offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. Our undergraduate program is accredited by ABET, and we currently have approximately 300 undergraduate and 65 graduate students, supported by 21 faculty members. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in geomatics and related civil engineering courses including AutoCAD / Civil 3D, surveying, GIS; developing and teaching advanced courses in one or more of the following areas: advanced surveying, GIS, and emerging geomatics topics.
- Serving as chair or member of committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees.
- Participating in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods.
- Supervising independent study activities.
- Serving as academic advisor to students.
- Serving on departmental, college, and university committees.
- Develop an externally funded research program that leads to publication in leading scholarly journals. Research topics could include advanced surveying, GIS, and emerging geomatics topics.
- Conducting and publishing research work in leading scholarly journals as a record of scholarly activity.
- Rendering service to the professional or lay community which is relevant to the individual’s academic specialty.
- Performing related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- An earned PhD in Geomatics, Geospatial, Geodetic or Civil Engineering, Surveying, or closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing (“All but dissertation” will be considered; degree must be completed before the date of hire).
- Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching excellence and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels and ability to teach students from different backgrounds with diverse life experiences and learning styles.
- Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of conducting research and publishing scholarly materials.
- Demonstrated ability to teach graduate courses in area of specialty, as well as undergraduate courses in civil engineering.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to engage successfully in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.
- Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Obtained or is interested in pursuing Professional Engineer and/or Professional Land Surveyor licensure and/or applicable professional certifications, such as Certified Federal Surveyor (CFedS), Certified Photogrammetrist, or Certified Hydrographer. Professional licensure may be required prior to tenure.
- Design office or consulting experience.
- Field experience on construction sites.
- Post-disaster reconnaissance experience.
- Expertise in an emerging research area related to geomatics engineering.
- Research emphasis applicable to or experience with Hawai'i and/or the Asian/Pacific region.
- Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
