Assistant Professor of Sustainability in Manufacturing (tenure track)

Job Description
The position resides in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The department has a major role in educating the creative game changing engineers for the industry as well as promoting high quality research and innovations. Development of tangible engineering products and related services is a truly interdisciplinary activity that extends across engineering, design, and business and stems from a strong core of innovative mechanical engineering principles and practices. We have excellent collaboration with Finnish manufacturing industries. The demographics of the national economy drives the industry to search for growth with innovations in the global market. The geographical location of Finland, combined with high-cost standards means that achieving a competitive edge requires a boldness to pursue new avenues in product and process development which distinguishes us from global competitors. Accordingly, our creative collaboration is diverse and spans across several stakeholders as educators, researchers, innovators, and leaders of product developers, thus having impact on society also through life wide learning.

We are now looking for an assistant professor of sustainability in manufacturing that will be placed at the Advanced Manufacturing and Materials (AM2) research group. At AM2, we investigate the properties and performance of engineering materials processed by advanced and sustainable manufacturing integrated in circular economy. Starting point in modern production at AM2 is digitally generated design and production data, that is further optimized by advanced analytical tools.

In this position, your research focus will be on digital driven manufacturing processes and digitalization in product development for better optimized and more sustainable products. A large visible impact is expected from you via an inspiring education of future engineering professionals in these fields. The research and education should enable and promote radical creativity, sustainability in manufacturing, and digitalization leading to industrial impact and entrepreneurial initiatives. You will also have great opportunities for collaboration with leading Finnish global companies in development for more versatile local production and logistics solutions for sustainability through digital technologies, like additive manufacturing. The sustainability in manufacturing is also fostered through interdisciplinary collaboration with other research groups, inside and outside from Aalto, as in the case for example, the project.

Your Role and Goals
  • Leading research via attracting and building up your own research team, and raising external funds for it, via national and international competitive funding;
  • Being able to carry out high-quality research and publish in top venues of the discipline;
  • Responsible teacher for courses on advanced manufacturing, digitalization in manufacturing, sustainability in manufacturing, and co-teaching other courses;
  • Deliver inspirational teaching to undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Supervising doctoral students with research-based knowledge, creativity and an entrepreneurial mindset where applicable;
  • Supervising master and bachelor students (thesis workplan often pulled by industrial partners);
  • Being one of the key parties for development of strategic openings and positioning Aalto University internationally, with ability to build a high-level international collaboration network;
  • Cooperation with industry (both quality and quantity) to secure the relevance and dissemination of the research as well as the capability of our students to meet the needs of the working life.

Scientific Environment
