Ideal applicants should demonstrate experience leading externally funded defense-relevant research programs and have a track record of effective graduate-level instruction, or, for junior applicants, potential for the same.   The department has opportunities for applicants specializing in research areas within mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, as well as materials sciences and engineering. Preferences will be given to the candidates who have an academic background in the following topical areas: (1) materials sciences and engineering, (2) vibration and structural dynamics, (3) aerospace dynamics and control, (4) ship design and naval architecture, (5) fluid mechanics and/or thermal sciences, (6) engineering design and (7) mechatronics.

The Department seeks candidates who demonstrate both a record of outstanding scholarship and contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are particularly interested in attracting candidates who can contribute to the diversity of the NPS community through their teaching, scholarship, and service.

The Naval Postgraduate School is an accredited graduate school whose students are drawn from the armed forces and civilian agencies of the United States and other countries.  Tenure-track faculty members are expected to teach introductory and advanced graduate classes and maintain an academic portfolio of naval-relevant basic and applied research, publication, and service.

Review of applications will begin on 16 January 2024.  Additional applications will be considered until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is the fall of 2024.

mae_application@nps.edu.

The minimum required qualifications are:

  • PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field at the time of appointment,

  • U.S. Citizenship that should be clearly stated in your application.

  • The Department of the Navy and the Naval Postgraduate School are committed to ensuring in both policy and practice that all persons are afforded equal opportunity for employment, advancement, and treatment regardless of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age or disability. Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) is promoted through a continuing Affirmative Employment Program in all situations where under-representation or under-utilization of minorities, women, and individuals with disabilities exist. This includes a work environment free from discrimination which provides equal opportunity for advancement to an individual's maximum potential, and fair and impartial review of complaints of discrimination. It also includes a work force free from sexual harassment by supervisors, colleagues, or subordinates (civilian or military).

The processing of discrimination complaints applies to both appropriated and non-appropriated fund employees of the Naval Postgraduate School and designated tenant activities. Complainants, their representatives or witnesses, EEO Counselors, and EEO program officials shall be free from restraint, interference, coercion, discrimination, or reprisal at any stage during the presentation and processing of a discrimination complaint, or any time thereafter.

Within the framework of the Equal Employment Opportunity Program there are two major divisions, the Discrimination Complaints Process and Affirmative Action which consists of the Special Emphasis Programs. The major goal of these programs is to identify barriers in the employment, advancement, and retention of that particular special emphasis area.
