Position Description

The Department of Systems and Industrial Engineering (SIE) in the College of Engineering (COE) is seeking a candidate for a career-track faculty position at the Associate Professor of Practice Rank for the Software Engineering (SFWE) degree programs. The successful candidate will serve as the Director of the SFWE program in addition to teaching courses in the Software Engineering programs.
We seek a candidate who can demonstrate strong leadership, outstanding teaching methods, as well as the ability to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate  courses in a variety of formats (e.g., on campus, online, distance). The candidate is expected to continue to build and maintain a strong SFWE program, teach courses, contribute to mentoring students, including those from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, establish and maintain ABET accreditation of the BS degree program in SFWE, work with the SIE Department Head and other Directors in SIE to hire new faculty in SFWE, supervise the Academic Advisor and Graduate Coordinator of SFWE program, coordinate SFWE faculty teaching roles, outreach to graduates of the SFWE program, and outreach to industry. The desired Software Engineering teaching areas include but not limited to the following: Databases and/or Data Persistence, Operating Systems, Networking, HPC/Distributed Computing, and Software Development Operations (DevOps/DevSecOps); while being familiar with Python, C/C++, Java and/or other programming languages. The SFWE program places a high value on collaboration both within the specific degree program, but also across other engineering disciplines. We are particularly interested in candidates who can work with a diverse student population, stakeholders, and colleagues.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Oversee the BS, MS, and PhD degree programs in SFWE program.
  • Initiate curricula changes and approves electives associated with the degree programs in SFWE.
  • Maintain ABET accreditation of the undergraduate degree program in SFWE.
  • Support preparation of Academic Program Review of the SIE departments, especially for the SFWE program.
  • Teach undergraduate courses at multiple sites using a variety of formats, including on campus, online, and interactive video platforms.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues across disciplinary lines.
  • Engage students in active learning, encouraging class participation, and provide support in completing class assignments / projects.
  • Develop / prepare course syllabi, assignments, and activities for course delivery.
  • Mentor and advise students with respect to career goals.
  • Support and coordinate SFWE faculty teaching roles.
  • Contribute to COE and the University of Arizona’s development through appropriate outreach to local communities (including government units, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and area residents).
  • Outreach to graduates of the SFWE program.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in the discipline of instruction or a closely related field to the teaching and administrative duties expected.
  • Selected candidate must provide education credentials during the offer discussions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in innovative teaching methods, specifically in distance modalities.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in undergraduate research and applied learning.
  • Relevant industry experience.
