#1: Mechanics and Materials: The department is particularly interested in candidates whose research intersects with the fields of Solid Mechanics and Materials, including but not limited to Soft/Bio Materials, Meta/Electronics Materials, Materials under Extreme Environments, Mechanical Design, and Advanced Manufacturing. Apply here.

#2: Acoustics: We seek candidates with a background in the general area of acoustics and mechanical vibrations. Candidates with expertise that complements the current research activities in micro and nano systems, energy harvesting, and bio applications are especially welcome. Apply here.

#3: Sustainable Manufacturing: We seek candidates with proven expertise in manufacturing and sustainability. We are especially interested in candidates with experience and future research plans focusing on advanced electronics or battery manufacturing to complement local manufacturing growth initiatives, and existing University research areas. Candidates with research capabilities in areas including artificial intelligence / data science-driven manufacturing, autonomy, advanced computation-enabled manufacturing, and sustainable materials are sought. Successful candidates are expected to have prior experience or a vision addressing the science and engineering challenges associated with future manufacturing encompassing enhanced productivity, reduced energy consumption, health and environmental impact, recycling, and societal implications. Established connection or potential for direct interactions with industry partners are desirable. Apply here.

Candidates must have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. Applicants are welcome to apply to multiple positions if their qualifications align with more than one priority area. The candidate will be expected to develop a research program capable of securing competitive external research funding. Candidates must also have a potential for quality teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and will be expected to address teaching needs in the respective areas identified above. Binghamton University is an R1 public research university and has a large and growing research portfolio in battery technology, advanced manufacturing, electronics packaging, pharmaceutical sciences, healthcare and therapies, and sustainability. Candidates are encouraged to review initiatives supported by the State and University Sponsored Research Centers.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has 20 faculty members, with undergraduate and graduate enrollments of approximately 400 and 125 students, respectively. In the pursuit of academic diversity and inclusive excellence, Watson strives to cultivate an equity-minded STEM community that challenges and eliminates exclusionary systems and practices and promotes innovation and academic success for all students, faculty and staff. We do this by creating and sustaining learning environments where differences and similarities are valued and respected, and all students, faculty and staff, especially women and underrepresented groups, are included and empowered to excel in engineering education. Potential applicants who share this goal, especially underrepresented minorities, women and persons with disabilities, are strongly encouraged to apply. Additional information about the Mechanical Engineering Department at Binghamton University can be found online at: http://www.binghamton.edu/me/

Applicants should submit: (1) a cover letter, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) a statement of research plans, (4) a statement of teaching interests, (5) a statement of contributions to diversity, and (6) a list of at least three professional references, including address, e-mail and telephone number. Applications received by December 31, 2022, will receive full consideration. The search will remain open until appointments have been made.
