The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Wayne State University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor, beginning in September 2025. The CEE Department is particularly interested in candidates with a strong teaching and research focus in the broader area of geotechnical engineering as it relates to civil and environmental infrastructure in dynamic urban environments.  Specific areas of interest include but are not limited to geostructures, urban coastal geotechnics, geotechnical design for reliability and resilience in the face of extreme climate events, a broader view of soil functions in an urbanized infrastructure context, biogeotechnics and materials, or environmental geotechnics. Practice in contemporary synergies of geotechnical engineering with data science and AI will be viewed as a strength.

The Department offers a rich set of interdisciplinary research environments, with opportunities for collaboration based on its expertise in the disciplines of environmental engineering (air, water soil), construction, transportation, and structural engineering. We have a strong record of working for urban infrastructure equity and inclusiveness.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program in their specialized area; implement inclusive, evidence-based teaching and learning approaches to ensure the academic success of a diverse student population; advise undergraduate and graduate (MS & PhD) students; contribute to university and professional service. In addition, the candidate will foster interdisciplinary collaborations and actively engage in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the college and university.

Candidates must have earned doctoral degree in civil engineering or a closely related field at the time of appointment. Candidates should be able to teach introductory geotechnical engineering (and laboratory course), an advanced geotechnical engineering course, and develop courses that expand the departments offerings. Candidates with a professional engineering license (PE) are a plus. We especially encourage applications from scholars who have been historically underrepresented in science, mathematics, and engineering and who have demonstrated an interest in seeking recruitment and retention of women and members of historically minoritized groups in engineering.

Duties will include: (1) Developing and instructing undergraduate and graduate level courses, (2) Mentoring and advising both undergraduate and graduate students, (3) Developing and engaging in scholarly activities, including research, publications, and externally-funded research projects, (4) Collaborating with other faculty colleagues in the department, college, and University, (5) Providing service to the local community and the university, and (6) Publishing research work in the frontline journals and presenting at society conferences.
