The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Vermont (UVM) seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor position in Mechanical Engineering, with an expected start date of no later than August 21, 2023. Candidates are expected to hold a baccalaureate degree and a doctorate in mechanical engineering or a closely related field.

The Department is seeking outstanding individuals whose research focus lies at the forefront of robotics and automation, applied broadly but not limited to unmanned vehicles, aerospace, agriculture, biotechnology, human-machine interaction, and manufacturing. The new faculty member is expected to maintain an active program of externally funded research, graduate student advising and contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching within the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The University of Vermont is steadily growing its research enterprise, topping $250 million in research expenditures last year. UVM’s Department of Mechanical Engineering is a very active contributor in this growth thanks to innovative research and a high level of collaboration across campus, nationally and internationally. Applicants who could develop multidisciplinary programs in collaboration with current faculty and research labs and centers, for example, the Spatial Analysis Lab (a member of ASSURE), the Vermont Complex System Center, and the research groups of the Larner College of Medicine, are of interest.

UVM is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and inclusive excellence of the academic community through their teaching, service and research, scholarship, or creative arts. We are an educationally purposeful community seeking to prepare students to be accountable leaders in a diverse and changing world. Members of the UVM community embrace and advance the values of Our Common Ground: Openness, Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Innovation, and Justice. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to the ideals of accessibility, inclusiveness, and academic excellence as reflected in the tenets of Our Common Ground. To that end, candidates must provide a diversity impact statement as part of the application detailing how they will further the diversity of the unit through their teaching and service at the University.

Applications must be submitted online at www.uvmjobs.com (position #006150). Applicants should provide (1) a cover letter that highlights their relevant experience; (2) a current curriculum vitae identifying specific areas of expertise; and statements of: (3) research interests and teaching interests; and (4) diversity impact and (5) the names and contact information for three references including at least one who can comment on teaching and mentoring abilities (these must be entered into the application system by candidates and requests for references will be managed by the application system). Applications without each of these components will not be considered. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and applicants are encouraged to submit their applications by December 1, 2022, when the review of submitted materials will begin. A background check will be conducted on each final candidate and salary will be made at a level appropriate to the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. For further information, please contact Yves Dubief at Yves.Dubief@uvm.edu or Douglas Fletcher at Douglas.Fletcher@uvm.edu.
