Position Overview

The University of Kansas (KU) Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) seeks an outstanding individual for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the discipline of architectural engineering. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development of academic and research programs and to the research community.

This search is focused on those candidates exploring cutting edge efforts in one or more of the following: environmentally-sustainable buildings; renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, and wind power for buildings; healthy buildings and indoor environmental quality; building materials and embodied carbon; grid interactive buildings; building system controls; smart building technologies; and machine learning for the built environment. The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate or equivalent in architectural or mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline at the time of joining the department. Candidates must demonstrate potential to develop an externally-funded research program and to design and teach high quality undergraduate and graduate courses. The target starting date is January 1, 2024 or August 18, 2024. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start of the position.

Job Description

40% Teaching
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in architectural engineering. Develop courses and participate in curriculum development. Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students throughout the course of their studies.

40% Research
Perform and conduct research related to environmentally-sustainable buildings; renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, and wind power for buildings; healthy buildings and indoor environmental quality; building materials and embodied carbon; grid interactive buildings; building system controls; smart building technologies; and machine learning for the built environment. Establish a strong research agenda leading to external grant support and publication in recognized refereed journals as well as participating in local, national and international professional conferences and other activities appropriate to the discipline. Supervise M.S. and Ph.D. studies.

20% Service
Perform service activities normally expected of university faculty commensurate with rank, including committee service to Department, School, and University. Also includes national and international service to the profession.

Required Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate or equivalent in architectural or mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline at the time of joining the department.
  • Demonstrable expertise in the fields of environmentally-sustainable buildings; renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, and wind power for buildings; healthy buildings and indoor environmental quality; building materials and embodied carbon; grid interactive buildings; building system controls; smart building technologies; and machine learning for the built environment.
  • Ability to communicate ideas effectively and to work well with others as demonstrated through application materials and interview.
  • Demonstrated potential to develop an externally-funded research program and to design and teach high quality undergraduate and graduate courses.
