Mechanical Engineering is a dynamic department within a rapidly growing R1 research university. To support its growing programs, the University completed a $14-million renovation of the Mechanical Engineering building in 2017 and is constructing a new engineering building scheduled to open in 2020 that will include a class 100 cleanroom. The department is initiating an aerospace engineering program, has recently hired its founding aerospace engineering program director, and will hire three more aerospace and two new mechanical faculty members (in addition to the current positions) in the near future. Reno, NV is one of ten participants nationwide in the FAA’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Pilot Program.
The Reno area has an ethnically diverse population of over 500,000, with growing engineering, aerospace, high-tech, and arts communities, and an international airport 10 minutes from the University. Situated on the banks of the Truckee River on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, the city is 45 minutes from Lake Tahoe and its magnificent recreational opportunities, 3.5 hours from Yosemite National Park, and 4 hours from San Francisco and the Pacific coast.
