The Department of Architecture in the School of Architecture and Planning at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York (SUNY), invites candidates to serve as the Stratigakos Fellow.

The fellowship is for a visiting faculty position at UB supporting research on the built environment as a vehicle for the creation of more inclusive communities, with a focus on gender and sexuality in architecture. This could be a one-semester appointment beginning in January 2025 (for the Spring 2025 semester), or August 2025 (for the Fall 2025 semester), or a two-semester appointment beginning in August 2025 (for the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters).

Established by faculty member, Despina Stratigakos, whose research examines how power and ideology function in architecture, the fellowship seeks to interrogate how inequities based on wealth, race, gender and physical ability are reinforced by patterns of land use and ownership, the organization of cities, and the design of space and place. A writer, historian and educator, Stratigakos has also gifted more than 150 books from her own shelves to form the Despina Stratigakos Women in Architecture Book Collection in the UB Libraries. The collection will serve as a resource for fellows and the public.

Application review will begin: immediately and will remain open until filled.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities:
• Develop a research/design project related to gender and sexuality in architecture. The final output of this project may include, but is not limited to, any combination of the following: a physical and/or digital exhibition, a public talk, and/or a symposium with invited guests.

• And will include teaching one or both of the following course types:
  • An original graduate-level, 3-credit elective course (remote or in-person, once weekly) centering on the theme of gender and sexuality in architecture. The work of this course may or may not support the development of your final project/event.
  • One section of an graduate level, 6-credit core studio course as a part of a teaching team.
