Full Professor (W3) in Process Systems Engineering (PSE)

The successful candidate is expected to represent the field of Process Systems Engineering in teaching and research. The professorship is dedicated to the digital transformation in the field of process engineering. This comprises, in particular, fundamental research as well as applied research in the field of computer-based methods for engineering design, modelling and optimization of engineering processes in chemistry, biology, biomedical engineering, energy or environmental technology, as well as their experimental validation and further development. The research focus can be directed towards different scales: the molecular scale, in order to achieve the design of optimum solvents, substrates, catalysts and materials; the machine scale, in order to optimize components or equipment; or the process scale, in order to develop and optimize production plants based on systemic interdisciplinary considerations.
The professorship is to encompass the classical areas of system simulation and optimization, as well as data science methods relevant to process engineering. For the development of novel engineering processes and production concepts in view of increasing system complexities, novel (numerical and experimental) methods are to be developed and implemented. These include automated system design, analysis of data uncertainty, as well as modelling and optimization paired with digital data management of processes in process engineering. The Cluster of Excellence EXC 2075 "Data-integrated Simulation Science (SimTech)" provides a vital research environment for process systems engineering at the University of Stuttgart.
In teaching, the professorship is to represent the Bachelor module "Machine and Apparatus Design", the Master module "Process and Systems Engineering", as well as a newly to be developed specialization "System Process Engineering". All courses are to be taught in German. The applicant is expected to possess strong didactic skills.
Candidates are also expected to have an excellent scientific record, as clearly evidenced by high-level scientific publications or patents with international visibility. Experience in managing projects with interdisciplinary character, in supervising staff and in the acquisition of research funding is expected. The willingness to cooperate with relevant institutes at the University of Stuttgart, especially those in the field of process engineering, is expected.
It is planned to locate the professorship at the Institute of Thermodynamics and Thermal Process Engineering (ITT) or at the Institute of Mechanical Process Engineering (IMVT) at the University of Stuttgart, depending on the focus areas of the person to be appointed. The technical equipment of both institutes will allow for the systemic, model-based interrogation and experimental evaluation of novel systems and equipment.
