Position Summary:
The John A. Reif, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) invites applications for Professor of Practice in construction engineering and management. CEE with 21 tenured/tenure-track faculty is a one of the most research active departments at NJIT with annual research expenditure exceeding $7M. Research thrust areas include resilient infrastructure systems, sustainable environmental systems and intelligent transportation systems and are funded by NSF, USDOT, USDOD, USEPA, NJDOT, NJDEP and private foundations, among others. The Department offers bachelor, master's and doctoral programs serving about 1000 students. CEE, in addition to all the core disciplines, offers both a MS and PhD in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Construction Engineering/Management and an inter-disciplinary MS in Critical Infrastructure Systems.
Essential Functions:
This role is designed for professionals with extensive industry experience who are passionate about educating the next generation of leaders in the construction field. The ideal candidate will bring real-world expertise into the classroom, fostering an engaging and practical learning environment. The responsibilities include:
- Teaching: Develop and deliver undergraduate and graduate-level courses in construction engineering, project management, sustainable construction practices, and related topics. Utilize innovative teaching methods to enhance student learning and engagement.
- Curriculum Development: Collaborate with faculty to design and update curriculum that reflects current industry practices, technologies, and emerging trends in construction engineering and management.
- Industry Engagement: Maintain active relationships with industry professionals and organizations. Facilitate guest lectures, workshops, and networking events that connect students with industry leaders.
- Mentorship: Advise and mentor students on academic and career paths, providing guidance on internships, job placements, and research opportunities.
- Research and Professional Development: Engage in applied research and professional development activities that contribute to the field of construction engineering and management. Seek opportunities for collaboration with industry and academia.
- Service: Participate in departmental and university committees, contribute to accreditation processes, and support community outreach initiatives.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
- Education: A master of science degree in Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering, Project Management, or a related field.
- Professional Experience: A minimum of 8 years of relevant industry experience in construction management or engineering. Experience in a leadership role is preferred.
- Licensure: A professional engineer license.
- Teaching Experience: Demonstrated experience in teaching of relevant construction engineering and management courses including laboratories at the undergraduate or graduate level. Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Industry Connections: Established network within the construction industry, with a track record of collaboration with companies, organizations, and professionals.

- At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
