The Faculty of Applied Science’s School of Engineering at UBC’s Okanagan campus has assembled world-class faculty and developed an innovative engineering curriculum to offer undergraduate and graduate engineering degrees in Electrical, Civil, and Mechanical specializations. The School of Engineering at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus invites candidates to apply for a Lecturer position to teach engineering courses commencing August 1, 2019 for a three year term.
Duties will include teaching, holding regular office hours, marking all assignments and exams, and reporting grades.
Applicants will preferably have a PhD or a minimum of a Masters in Structural Engineering and post-secondary teaching experience. A Professional Engineer designation in Canada with several years of work experience is required.
Structural Engineering Lecturer (Job Opening ID #31438)
This position provides a rare opportunity to pursue a career based on excellence in teaching at the School of Engineering. The successful candidate will teach existing courses related to structural analysis and design, mechanics of materials, statics, dynamics, and any other structural design related courses. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop and teach innovative upper undergraduate level and graduate level courses. Examples of these courses include but, are not limited to, climate change effect on structures and structural design; strut and tie model and design; and, design of tall buildings.
Experience with the design of steel, timber, concrete or masonry structures, bridges, design of structures against fatigue, wind, blast, tsunami, and/or seismic loads will be considered an asset. Experience with delivering undergraduate courses in integration of advanced analysis and design tools is desirable.
The successful individual will also need to be highly engaged in curriculum development and pedagogical innovations.
Applicants must have either demonstrated an interest in achieving excellence in teaching and learning. Candidates would be expected to participate in departmental meetings, collaborate with a broad network of engineers in academic and industry settings, and may be assigned to teach courses during the summer. The successful candidates in collaboration with existing faculty members will foster and promote entrepreneurial aspiration of the students and the School-at-large. Industrial experience would be an asset.
