The Department of Mining Engineering and Management (MEM) at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology seeks a Department Head to lead its advancement in education, research, and industry engagement. This is a 12-month position reporting directly to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs. A Ph.D. in Mining Engineering or a closely related discipline is required, as is a record of teaching, scholarship, and service sufficient to warrant a tenured appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor, pending SD Board of Regents approval. Leadership or management experience also is required; with experience as an industry professional or in academic-industry collaborations preferred.

The MEM department currently enrolls 105 students in an ABET-accredited BS in Mining Engineering, 24 students in a MS degree in Mining Engineering and Management, and 12 PhD students in the Mining Engineering specialization of the Ph.D. program in Geology, Geological Engineering, and Mining Engineering. The department has a strong commitment to online graduate education and supports a Mining Engineering Minor at the undergraduate level. A variety of analytical and equipment facilities exist within the department and across campus. Collaborative opportunities are available through the Sanford Underground Research Facility, located within the former Homestake Gold Mine, in Lead, SD.

The MEM Department Head will provide visionary leadership and administrative skills for the further advancement of MEM programs; encourage excellence and innovation in teaching, research, and service; advance professional development of the faculty and staff; foster growth in the areas of enrollment, research, and fundraising; actively recruit students to the program; and foster productive interdisciplinary relationships with a variety of entities on and off campus. In particular, the MEM Head will lead development and execution of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary effort with industry partners to integrate technology into mining processes and practices. The MEM department head also will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise.
