The Bioinnovation Center is an entirely new and unique platform that combines cutting-edge research, strategic infrastructure investments, expert education, and popularization of science. As part of the Bioinnovation Center the Paper Converting and Packaging and Communications Engineering research groups are looking for a talented and exceptionally motivated 

Doctoral candidate in Biobased substrates and printed electronics 

Your role and goals 
This project seeks to develop design methodology and solutions for intelligent packaging in which the interaction of the cellulose-based substrate and electronics printed on top of it jointly form a battery-free sensor and a memory that can be read wirelessly. The idea is to use the physical response of the substrate to the phenomena of interest (temperature, humidity, photocurrent), which causes non-reversable changes to the printed circuit. The change in device impedance in turn, can be detected by illuminating the device antenna with a carrier and measuring the backscattered signal. The proposed solution has very low cost, is battery-free, and has minimal environmental impact. 

Your experience and ambitions 
Knowledge and expertise in lignocellulosic materials, nanocellulose, thin films, printed electronics and printed circuits is appreciated. Relevant MSc degree covering the aforementioned topics is necessary. The topic in question needs an ability to adapt into a multidisciplinary challenge. Supervision and instruction in these fields will be available from our academic staff. 

In addition, an eligible candidate should have: 
  • Enthusiasm and motivation towards sustainability and new innovations  
  • Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration 
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English

What we offer 
The position is initially filled for 2 years, and following a successful midterm progress review, the contract is continued for another 2 years. The total duration of doctoral studies is four years.  

Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. The starting salary is approx. 2500€/month, and it will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. Employment includes occupational healthcare. Our facilities are located at Aalto University Otaniemi campus in Espoo, Finland.
