The College of Engineering and Science at Louisiana Tech University invites applications for a Facilities Engineer to support the research and educational mission of its Institute for Micromanufacturing (IfM). The Facilities Engineer holds a 12-month, non-faculty appointment.  Applicants must have an earned bachelor’s degree or equivalent from any field of engineering or engineering technology.

The primary responsibility of the Facilities Engineer is to take a leading role in the daily operation, maintenance, and enhancement of IfM facilities and infrastructure such that given resources are in operational readiness and available for maximum support of IfM’s research and educational activities. Specific examples of duties that support this primary responsibility include:

  • Assumes a leading role in the daily operations of IfM facilities in coordination with the IfM Director and Associate Director of Facilities
  • Responds to facility needs in a timely and complete manner as directed by the IfM Director and Associate Director of Facilities
  • Plans and implements preventative maintenance and facility enhancements
  • Strives for continuous improvement of facility operations
  • Keeps abreast of advancements in facilities operations and maintain a high degree of expertise in this area, providing training to others at IfM as needed
  • Communicates with vendors and suppliers to obtain the specifications, instructions, or other information required for installation, testing, qualification, maintenance, and repair of IfM infrastructure items
  • Schedules maintenance as needed with outside vendors and maintains prescribed preventative maintenance practices
  • Carries out basic machine shop and fabrication tasks in support of research or facilities activities
  • Takes a leading role in maintaining IfM’s liquid nitrogen supply, disinfecting all DI water lines, installation and oversight of all gaseous nitrogen lines, compressed air lines, vacuum lines, control valves, and regulators for related equipment
  • Trains users of the IfM facilities in proper and safe practices, and assists in enforcement of IfM safety policies
  • Provides technical and logistic support to the research and teaching activities of IfM and the connected Biomedical Engineering Building (BMEB)
  • Takes a leading role in the annual inventory process, ensuring that our tagged item inventory is as accurate as possible
  • Is an active member of IfM Emergency Response Team and provides timely and appropriate response as needed under the guidance of the IfM Director and the Associate Director of Facilities
  • Assists the Associate Director of Facilities in IfM and BMEB regarding security systems, cameras, access cards, and access readers
  • Assists the Associate Director of Facilities in the writing and oversight of external bid processes for goods and services related to IfM facilities and infrastructure
  • Assists the Associate Director of Facilities with safety training, safety inspections, and safety procedures for IfM and BMEB with the exception of some IfM cleanroom operations.

Housed in its own dedicated facility built in 1995 with the help of federal and state investments, the IfM plays an indispensable role in supporting basic and applied research across a multitude of disciplines. The IfM offers over 20,000 sq. ft. of laboratory space including 5,000 sq. ft. of permanent clean room facilities for the design, fabrication, and testing of microdevices, a versatile metrology suite for materials characterization, as well as dedicated faculty, graduate student, and technical staff offices. The IfM is a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment focused on innovations in multiscale materials, structures, devices and systems.  In addition to scientific research, the IfM also includes in its mission the education and training to the next generation of scientists and engineers.
