DTU invites applications for a position as professor in the research field of environmental impact of maritime activities with a specific focus on the Arctic. The professorship is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua), Section for Oceans and Arctic, and is based at DTU campus in Kgs. Lyngby.

We expect you to lead the development of a research group investigating the impact of multiple anthropogenic stressors on lower levels of marine food webs and their consequences to ecosystem services, particularly in Arctic and sub-Arctic seas characterized by rapid climate change. The research group complements existing biological, physical, and chemical oceanographic and fisheries research groups at DTU Aqua.

The establishment of your research group requires cooperation with other units at DTU working with relevant topics such as shipping, geological resource extraction, contamination, as well as relevant research institutions in the North Atlantic, especially in Greenland.
You are expected to push the frontier of applied marine science, enhancing evidence-based advice on ocean management issues to national and international authorities, contributing to innovation in maritime industry and to teaching in a university, whose goal it is to offer Europe’s best engineering education.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You are expected to develop a research group focusing on man-made impact on the marine ecosystem e.g. the impact from maritime activities, climate change, and contaminants from a broad marine science perspective. You must be able to encompass several disciplines relating to maritime research in your research projects, and to show willingness and capability of working yourself into new areas. Extraordinary cooperation capabilities are prerequisite as well as proven skills to attract substantial funding to the research field.

Your research field and work area include:

  • Investigating the effects of multiple anthropogenic stressors on ecosystem structure and functioning with focus on lower trophic levels in Arctic and sub-Arctic areas considering the impact of climate change,
  • Disentangling the connection between these stressors, biodiversity, and ecosystem services, including carbon sequestering, recycling of contaminants and production of marine living resources,
  • Addressing challenges and develop methods to reduce the environmental impact of maritime activities, such as shipping and geological resource extraction in close cooperation with relevant research environments and industry.

You are expected to contribute actively to regional and global programmes, addressing the ecosystem approach to ocean management, e.g. in relevant initiatives of the International Council of the Sea, the Arctic Council and the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030.

Work includes to give advice on the implementation and development of environmental directives to national and international authorities and on concrete improvements of maritime activities to the industry.

Results should be disseminated in peer-reviewed publications and dedicated outlets aiming to inform regional and global initiatives, authorities, stakeholders, and the public at large.
