MSE Lecturer I

Responsibilities*

Job Summary

The Materials Science and Engineering Department at the University of Michigan is seeking applications for a Lecturer to teach introductory undergraduate materials science and engineering courses during the Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 semesters. Courses may include MATSCIE 220, MATSCIE 250, or others depending on the qualifications and preferences of the applicant. This position is open as a teaching assignment for two semesters, but it can lead to additional opportunities in subsequent academic years. It is anticipated that two Lecturers will be hired.

Responsibilities*

Teach an introductory engineering materials course to engineering undergraduate students. Topics covered:  Properties (mechanical, thermal and electrical) of metals, polymers, ceramics, and electronic materials. Correlations of these properties with: (1) their internal structures (atomic, molecular, crystalline, micro-and macro); (2) service conditions (mechanical, thermal, chemical, electrical, magnetic and radiation); and (3) processing.

The lecturer has responsibility for teaching the courses as outlined and is expected to attend course meetings, hold office hours, and handle routine matters related to instruction. College of Engineering courses are held in-person on the Ann Arbor campus.

Required Qualifications*

  • PhD degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or related discipline or equivalent years teaching Materials Science courses at the college level.
  • Demonstrated teaching effectiveness as evidenced by evaluations or other relevant metrics.
  • Commitment to inclusive classroom practices, academic excellence, and student success.
  • Familiarity with the administrative tasks associated with teaching at the college level.
  • Strong oral presentation and communication skills.

Desired Qualifications*

Ability to teach advanced level courses in Materials Science and Engineering.

Selection Process

The deadline for applications is July 1, 2024. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. It is anticipated that two Lecturers will be hired.

Applications will be selected based upon demonstrated subject matter expertise, successful performance in the classroom, ability to complete administrative tasks, and the needs of the department.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization (LEO), AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
