The Network and Telecom Engineer reports to the Assistant Director of Networking. This position is responsible for supporting Stevens 24×7 wired, wireless and telecom network infrastructure to meet University mission, goals, and strategic initiatives across academic, administrative, and research operations. The position is part of an integral unit supporting campus-wide network infrastructure, security, routing, switching and wireless networking for 8000+ concurrent wired/wireless devices and hundreds of systems. This is a user-centric role which involves travel around campus, consulting and collaborating with users and cross functional departments, to ensuring excellent customer service and responsiveness. The position also requires the ability to work off hours and weekends as necessary to meet the needs of the University.
Monitors network performance and ensures high level system availability and reliability.
Works collaboratively with colleagues in Information Technology and across the university to provide ongoing support and to meet departmental and institutional needs in academics, administration, and research functions.
Serve as an escalation point to User Support Services. And respond to level 2 and 3 tickets in a timely manner
Configures, maintains, and optimizes network equipment including switches, access points, upgrades, enhancements, maintenance, etc.
Maintain and support Unified Communication systems, Voice including SIP Trunks, Unified messaging, Conferencing, and Integrated Access services
Perform network maintenance and system upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes and security configurations
Responsible for maintaining Stevens wireless infrastructure which consists of 2000 access points
Stays up to date with advances in the field, and works to keep Stevens consistent with best-practices.
Configures, maintains, and optimizes security/authentication devices and software including enhancements, upgrades, etc.
Configures, maintains, and optimally utilizes network monitoring and management devices and software.
Monitors resource utilization, analyzes trending, and performs capacity planning.
Works within established configuration and change management policies and procedures to ensure awareness, documentation, approval and success of changes made to the network infrastructure.
Works with vendors as necessary to resolve problems.
Works very well with customers, regardless of technical ability, in a complex, high pressure environment to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction, trust and confidence.
Supports the training and mentoring of other employees and support staff on networking topics and issues.
Other duties as assigned.
*Required Qualifications: *
Bachelor’s degree in a related field; equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
A minimum of 3-5 years of related experience. Higher Ed experience preferred.
Skills, knowledge, and experience configuring and maintaining the following: VLANs, Subnets, VLAN Tagging, Trunks, NAC appliances, Radius/TACACs protocols, Next Generation Zone Based Firewalls, VPN technologies such as with IPSEC/SSL/TLS protocols, Remote Access and Site-to-Site VPNs.
Broad technical experience with LAN, WAN, Datacenter, Cloud, Wireless, and Network services such as DNS, DHCP, IPAM, and network authentication services. Experience with cloud approaches to networking and building a software-oriented approach to building, running, and managing large mission critical networks is highly desirable
Solid experience with Windows OS, including management and configuration of DHCP and DNS Services.
Demonstrated experience at working well with users at all levels from students through senior management.
Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities in a highly dynamic and fast-paced environment.
Knowledge and experience with VoIP including VLAN, QOS, and SIP trunks.
Strong organizational, prioritization, and time management skills.
Demonstrated strong analytical, systems thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Proficient knowledge, understanding, and application of networking protocols and standards such as DNS, DHCP, BGP, OSPF, SNMP, 802.1x, 802.3, 802.11, etc.
Hands-on experience with monitoring, network diagnostics and network analytics tools.
Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position such as lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and ladder work.
Demonstrated sound judgment and decision-making commensurate with the responsibilities of the position, and specifically in maintaining a high-availability network.
Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with both highly technical and non-technical audiences.
