The Center for Science and Protection of Engineered Environments (SPREE) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Northwestern University invites post-doctoral applications in the field of fiber reinforced, Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) and large-scale 3D printing.

The postdoctoral associate will work with a team of faculty and students on the optimization of UHPC composites with superior mechanical properties at both fresh and hardened state. In particular, the focus of the research will be on the adoption of UHPC composites for large-scale 3D printing applications. The main duties of the post-doctoral associate will be (1) manage the CEE 3D printing laboratory; (2) advise and train graduate and undergraduate students; (3) collaborate with other team members to design the experimental campaign; (4) execute relevant experimental tests; (5) analyze data; (6) participate in project progress review meetings; (7) prepare draft reports and publications.

The applicant minimum qualifications are as follows

• A PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering or other relevant discipline.

• Knowledge and independent research capability in experimental mechanics, concrete mechanics, and rheology.

• Proficiency in the use of typical concrete laboratory equipment such as mixing, casting, servo hydraulic testing, etc. Willingness to play a leadership role in scientific writing, public speaking, and other dissemination activities.

• Ability to work in collaborative projects with team members of diverse backgrounds.

In addition, the successful candidate is expected to have knowledge/experience in one or more of the following topics.

• Operation of 3D printers and 6 DOF robotic arms.

• State-of-the-art 3D printing technologies.

• Experience and proficiency in programming languages and math packages such as MATLAB,

Python, Fortran, C/C++, etc.

• Concrete rheology and fresh state property testing and/or computational modeling
