Summary:

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Howard University is entering an exciting period of transformation and growth. We are seeking a visionary leader to serve as Department Chair during this pivotal time. Our department is actively expanding its research portfolio, focusing on cutting-edge areas such as sustainable infrastructure, smart cities, and climate resilience. We are also in the process of hiring multiple new faculty members to strengthen our expertise and drive innovation. With a surge in student interest and increasing enrollment numbers, we are poised to make significant impacts in addressing global environmental and infrastructure challenges. The ideal candidate will lead our department through this dynamic phase, fostering excellence in both research and education while capitalizing on emerging opportunities in the field.

Expected Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or a closely related discipline
  • Scholarly record appropriate for a tenured full professor appointment
  • Demonstrated commitment to the University’s mission and core values
  • Proven academic leadership, including experience in personnel management (faculty and staff), resource management (finances, facilities, equipment, ), and ensuring high-quality academic programming and delivery
  • Evidence of innovative initiatives focused on enhancing excellence in teaching, research, recruitment, mentoring, student success, and retention
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with faculty, staff, department administrators, peer colleagues, students, alumni, donors, and other stakeholders
  • Experience in cultivating philanthropic partnerships, securing extramural funding, and leading fundraising initiatives to support program growth and sustainability
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to obtain one
