The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems at the Aalto University School of Chemical Engineering is looking for

Doctoral Researcher and/or Postdoctoral Researcher in the area of wood science and technology

The candidate(s) will be mainly working in different projects related to wood-water interactions and wood modification techniques and other treatments. The positions are available immediately, but the starting date can be negotiated to several months ahead.

The positions are open in the research group Wood Material Science  headed by Prof. Lauri Rautkari. The laboratories are situated on the main campus of Aalto University in Otaniemi (Finland) within the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems which is equipped with excellent facilities ( and in Nanomicroscopy center (

The eligible candidate should have:
  • Recently obtained MSc/PhD in wood science and technology
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English
  • Experience in carrying out independent research and working in a team environment
  • Postdocs: Experience of writing high level scientific publications

Skills, knowledge and abilities in the following areas are highly desirable:
  • Good understanding of wood structure and chemistry
  • Postdocs: Experience in raising competitive funding

What we offer
The salary is determined according to the salary system of Finnish universities. The expected starting salary for a Postdoctoral Researcher is about 3570 €/month and for a Doctoral Researcher about 2540 €/month and will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. The contract includes occupational health care, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system.
