The Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Alabama (http://me.eng.ua.edu) invites qualified candidates to apply for multiple faculty positions (tenure-track or tenured) at the Assistant or Associate Professor ranks. Exceptional candidates with specializations relevant to convergent and emerging areas of mechanical engineering in two broad tracks of advanced manufacturing systems and thermofluids science will be considered. Under the advanced manufacturing systems track, particular attention will be given to candidates with research interests in robotic and automated manufacturing, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), as well as artificial intelligence, virtual/augmented reality and connectivity applied to advanced manufacturing systems. Under the thermofluids science track, candidates with expertise in cyber-physical energy systems, sustainable energy, and gas turbines and engines for power generation and propulsion are being sought. The Department has established strong track records and strengths in these areas as evident by the fast rise in the number of faculty, externally-funded research and collaboration with major industrial companies.
Information about ME Department, COE and University of Alabama:
The departmental has over 1,650 undergraduate and close to 130 graduate students in M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The present faculty size of 32 is expected to significantly grow over the next several years through this search and other planned faculty hires. The Department is comprised of three main groups; Thermofluids Science, Dynamic Systems and Control, and Materials Processing and Manufacturing, with research clusters and state-of-the-art laboratories in internal combustion engines, thermal and building energy, human-machine interaction and soft robotics, additive manufacturing, nanomechanical characterization, bio-inspired nanocomposite, and automotive engineering, just to name a few. With total annual sponsored program awards of about $6 million, the Department is home to several federally/state-funded centers. The Mechanical Engineering Department is one of the seven departments in the UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering which has close to 6,000 students and over 170 tenured or tenure-track faculty. The College also houses nine research centers and is active in the University’s four new research institutes: the Alabama Transportation Institute, Alabama Water Institute, Alabama Cyber Institute, and Alabama Life Research Institute. The College occupies well over a half million square feet of state of the art facilities, including the $300M Shelby Engineering and Science Quadrangle completed in 2014 and the newly reopened $22M renovated HM Comer Hall.
Established in 1831, The University of Alabama (UA) currently enrolls over 37,000 students and employs over 2,000 full and part-time faculty members in thirteen colleges and schools. In 1837, UA became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, the UA is one of the fastest growing flagship universities in the nation. The University of Alabama is ranked among the top 60 public universities in the nation in U.S. News and World Report’s annual college rankings for more than a decade. The Carnegie Foundation has recognized UA with its Very High Research Activity status (formerly known as R1 status). The University is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with a metropolitan population of over 200,000.
