The prospective candidate will be working on an exciting project in the intersection of engineering and biology to develop a platform for continuous diabetes hormone monitoring. The platform integrates a microfluidic device with an imaging setup to achieve continuous measurement of insulin, C-peptide, and glucose. The PDF candidate will be working on developing and optimizing the imaging setup where a compact fluorescence microscope with spatially multiplexed one or two-color laser illumination and high-speed fluorescence imaging will be integrated to measure the fluorescence single emitted from beads. This project is a continuation of the reported 2021 RT-ELISA paper where simultaneous measurement of glucose and insulin was demonstrated. The developed platform will be eventually connected to diabetic rats for continuous measurement. The animal experiments will be done in collaboration with the Schertzer lab at McMaster University. The applicant will have access to world-class facilities in micro/nanofabrication, fluorescence microscopy, and bio-characterization at the University of Waterloo.
Areas of Responsibility / Scope of Research
The PDF will lead designing and building of an imaging system to simultaneously detect fluorescence beads passing through a detection channel. The PDF must hold a PhD in engineering (electrical, mechanical, chemical, biomedical or similar) or science (physics, chemistry).
Expertise in optics and imaging, photonics, quantum dot and nanomaterials, microfluidics is required.
Expertise in molecular engineering, antibody conjugation, and synthetic biology is desired.
Having high-quality publications.
Exceptional problem solving and critical thinking skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively in meetings to deliver and report on project progress.
Strong leadership, management skills, and the ability to work independently within a multidisciplinary research lab.
