The Electrical Engineering Program at the University of Portland (UP) seeks a tenure-track assistant professor to join a thriving academic community in August 2021. The program offers a BSEE degree and a minor in Computer Engineering. We encourage applicants with expertise in digital systems, embedded systems, renewable energy, and other related areas to apply. This is a full-time faculty position with benefits. Through small classes and labs, the EE program engages students in developing skills and knowledge for successful technology careers and graduate school. The curriculum includes hands-on, collaborative projects, culminating in a capstone project often conducted with industry partners.
We will conduct the first review of applications on November 9, 2020 and continue until the position is filled. The expected teaching commitment is 9 credit hours per semester; this is a full-time, 9-month (August-May) position.
Enhance, develop, and teach the equivalent of 3 courses per semester across all levels of the undergraduate and graduate electrical engineering curriculum. In addition to electrical engineering courses and labs, the faculty also teach courses such as introduction to engineering, engineering computing with applications, analysis of engineering data, and engineering economics. There are opportunities to develop new courses and some courses include both undergraduate and graduate students.
Participate in department, school and university faculty/staff meetings and professional development workshops.
Pursue scholarly activity within the discipline to enhance teaching and program offerings.
Service to the School of Engineering, University of Portland and greater community.
Assist with program assessments and accreditation reports.
Mentor and advise students and capstone projects (projects are counted as part of the teaching commitment).
Education & Experience
Required: Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related field at the time the position will start (August 2021).
Required: The successful candidate will have demonstrated lived experience, knowledge, skills, and/or success in diversity, equity & inclusion work within or transferable to higher education; these should be described in the cover letter, teaching statement and/or a separate diversity statement.
Required: Teaching, training, or technical supervisory/managerial experience.
Required: Ability to enhance and teach a variety of electrical and general engineering courses, labs, and workshops.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred
Ability to enhance and teach courses in one or more of the following areas: digital systems, embedded systems, renewable energy or other related areas.
Certificate or degree in Engineering Education.
Evidence of effective course development and teaching at the university level.
Experience working with university students in the classroom, on capstone projects, or as the director/manager of internships.
Evidence of effective oral and written communication skills.
Evidence of effective project collaboration.
