Multiple Postdoc and Ph.D. positions are immediately available at Professor Xuan (Sean) Kong’s research group in the College of Civil Engineering at Hunan University, China. Prof. Kong is actively looking for highly-motivated postdoc and Ph.D. students. Candidates with expertise in one of the following areas are encouraged to apply: machine/deep learning, computer vision, signal/image processing, smart and wireless sensing, structural modal identification/damage detection/ health monitoring/non-destructive evaluation in Civil /Mechanical /Aerospace /Electrical fields. The postdoc position is available immediately and the preferred start date of Ph.D. position is February 2020 or September 2020. Qualified candidates will receive a competitive salary and work on cutting-edge projects.
The successful candidate(s) will work on multi-disciplinary research in developing machine/deep learning and smart sensing methods to improve the safety and life of civil/bridge structures, specifically in the following research topics: (1) moving sensing based modal identification, damage detection, health monitoring and performance evaluation of bridge structures; (2) applying machine/deep learning and computer vision techniques to identify spatiotemporal and weight information of traffic vehicles, to characterize structure dynamic responses and modal information, and to track and manage overloaded vehicles; (3) bridge scour research including scour mechanism, fluid/wave-soil/particle-structure interaction, detection and monitoring methods, countermeasures and rehabilitation materials/techniques.
- The applicant must have completed a Ph.D. degree (for postdoc position) from a reputable university with background in Civil/Mechanical/Computer/Electrical engineering in a topic of relevance.

Prof. Xuan Kong is a full professor in the College of Civil Engineering at Hunan University, also the department chair of applied mechanics research center. He graduated with his Ph.D. degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from Louisiana State University in 2013. He was a structural engineer at SBM offshore USA and a project manager at Colorado Department of Transportation. He was also an adjunct instructor at Colorado School of Mines. His expertise is in structure dynamics, structural modal identification, damage detection and health monitoring, vehicle-bridge coupled vibration, and bridge scour monitoring. He has published more than 30 journal papers on highly-ranked journals, 3 books, 1 US patent and 5 Chinese patents. He is currently the associate editor for the ASCE Journal of Aerospace Engineering, a reviewer for more than 20 journals.
