Research, Innovation and Development:
The Institute puts a strong emphasis on research, innovation, and development to create impact through published papers, hardware, and software prototyping, deployments and ultimately, technology transfer. It strongly focuses on graduate education via the PhD program (various policies to attract PhD students, have about 238scholars in ten years). It also extends significant support for initial career development via initiation research grant, support for conference travel and professional society membership, and encouragement of continuing collaborations with foreign partner institutions (with options for short-term leave support). It has implemented systems of yearly appraisal/ feedback and a tenure process to help faculty members aim high and create an institution whose reputation is benchmarked against international standards.

The Institute aims to provide an excellent education. The BTech in Computer Science and Design (CSD) Program has many innovative concepts like starting with the core CSD courses, allowing long duration projects, streams providing limited specializations in CS/ECE/CB as well as interdisciplinary areas, and so on. The department will have a specialized Masters’ program, which will be developed later. The department currently also has a Ph.D. program to produce the next generation of researchers and future faculty for other Institutions.

Compensation and Quality of Life:
Tenure Track Faculty Positions in Computer Science and Design: The Institute provides a compensation (CTC) of over Rs.2 lakh/month for a starting Asst. Prof. and allows a faculty member to supplement it through research grants, summer sabbaticals in R&D labs/companies, consultancy, etc. The campus is situated in Okhla, Phase-III with a Metro station within ½ km, with modern, good quality, and spacious accommodation for faculty.

For Professor of Practice: The overall compensation will be approx Rs.1.86 Lac per month, in the visiting faculty consolidated scale, which is defined from time to time by the Board, as per the expertise and domain knowledge.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. from a top Institution in India or abroad, perhaps some post-doc experience, good research, and publication track record, and show future potential. We seek candidates grounded in some of the core areas of Human-Centered Design, who are driven by emerging systems applications, have the capability to build a research program, and provide innovation and quality teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. For Professor of Practice: The eligibility criteria and the necessary qualifications will be based on the courses and/or research activities for which such faculty are being hired. The candidates must preferably hold a Ph.D., but it is not an essential criterion. However, this requirement will be waived if s/he has a good academic record in any discipline from a reputed educational institute with over 15 years of industry experience for Professor of Practice. The applicant will have specialist knowledge in the domain, expertise that will complement the available expertise within IIIT-Delhi and be able to bring practice-oriented teaching frameworks into the classroom. The candidate must possess strong communication skills and should have some teaching experience. Preference will be given to candidates having a good track record of teaching at the undergraduate (as indicated by student feedback).

About Department & Center:
With an increasing focus on user experience and keeping humans in the loop, the importance of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Interaction Design, and Design Thinking are also increasing rapidly in IT-based products and services. Digital media is at the heart of many aspects of design in areas like education, social media, gaming, virtual/augmented reality, etc. We at the Department of Human-Centered Design (HCD) focus on design research areas that are strongly related to IT and CSE. We have interdisciplinary programs on ‘B.Tech. in Computer Science and Design’ (CSD) and PhD to develop next-generation engineers with robust computing skills coupled with design thinking capabilities and knowledge in areas like Animation, Digital Media, Virtual Reality, Gaming, etc. We also engage with industries and government organizations to build collaborative programs and projects.

Faculty at the Human-Centered Design Department are closely affiliated with Center for Design and New Media ​(CDNM), to teach and conduct research at the intersection of design, media, and computing. CDNM is sponsored by Tata Consultancy Service, A TCS Foundation Initiative and focuses on both of these areas – Digital Media and Design – as they have strong synergies between them. The group will work with colleagues of other departments, as these areas complement them richly.
