The Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (http://cee.usc.edu) in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering (https://viterbischool.usc.edu/) is searching for outstanding faculty candidates in civil and environmental engineering to advance the department’s strategic vision (https://cee.usc.edu/about/strategic-vision-future-mission/).  While outstanding candidates only at tenured Associate and full Professor ranks will be considered from all areas, such senior candidates with research interests and expertise in the following high-priority areas are especially encouraged to apply:

  • Construction and building automation. Topics of interest include smart and sustainable buildings, integration of sensing, actuation, and artificial intelligence in design, construction and building automation, robotic construction and on-site automation, digital fabrication, off-site and modular construction, human-machine construction and building automation systems.
  • Water resources engineering. Topics of interest include computational hydrodynamics and hydrology, ecohydrology and ecological engineering, modeling and mitigation of climate impacts, and understanding the resilience of communities to disasters and anthropogenic factors.

Our department’s search this year aligns with USC’s $1 billion Frontiers of Computing initiative, the largest, most comprehensive academic initiative in the university’s history (http://computing.usc.edu). The initiative has already resulted in the creation of the new USC School of Advanced Computing (http://sac.usc.edu), which aims to advance computing research and expand USC’s presence in Silicon Beach, L.A. County’s tech corridor. Candidates have the opportunity to be affiliated with our new USC School of Advanced Computing, with priority given to those whose research aligns with one or more of the following affinity areas: computing and (i) sustainability, (ii) security, (iii) health, and (iv) systems. Applicants are required to incorporate into their research and teaching statements at least one page that clearly describes how their research and teaching interests and accomplishments align with at least one of these affinity areas. Applications that do not address the affinity areas in their statements will be considered incomplete and will not move forward in the selection process.

The USC Viterbi School of Engineering is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and welcomes applications from women, individuals from racial/ethnic populations demographically underrepresented in engineering, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. Outstanding senior applicants who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership, and whose past activities document a commitment to issues involving the advancement of women in science and engineering may be also considered for the Lloyd Armstrong, Jr. Endowed Chair, which is supported by USC’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program endowment.

We expect all applicants to have a strong commitment to research, doctoral student mentoring, and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants should have a doctorate in civil or environmental engineering, or a related field of study, and must have a well-established and accomplished academic record.

The position is available starting August 16, 2025. To receive full consideration, candidates should apply on-line at: https://usccareers.usc.edu/search-jobs. Application materials must include: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests (2 pages, with a separate third page that focuses specifically on how candidate’s research fits in one or more of the new USC School of Advanced Computing research affinity areas), a statement of teaching interests (1 page), a statement on fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion (1 page), and contact information for five references. To receive full consideration, all materials should be received by December 5, 2024; applications received after this deadline might not be considered. All application materials will be held in the strictest confidence. For more information, applicants are welcome to contact Professor Lucio Soibelman (Soibelman@usc.edu) for the construction automation position and Professor Felipe De Barros (fbarros@usc.edu) for the water resources engineering position.

In November 2007, the department was the beneficiary of a $17 million pledge from Sonny Astani, the largest ever bestowed on a department of civil and environmental engineering at that time.  The Astani Department has 29 tenured/tenure track faculty members, including four chaired professorships, nine current or former Young Investigator and Early Career awardees, and many fellows of professional organizations. The department recently renovated the civil and environmental engineering laboratories with a multimillion-dollar investment from the USC Viterbi School, including new equipment and renovated space to support cutting-edge research.

It counts 213 full-time, tenure-track faculty members, and it is home to the Information Sciences Institute, the Institute for Creative Technologies, two previously awarded National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers, a Department of Energy EFRC (Energy Frontiers Research Center), and the Department of Homeland Security’s first University Center of Excellence, CREATE. The school is affiliated with the USC Stevens Center for Innovation. Research expenditures typically exceed $177 million annually.
