Construction Engineering/Management Civil Engineering
The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Full Professor rank for the Vecellio Professorship in Construction Engineering and Management effective August 2020. Outstanding applicants will also be considered for appointment at the Associate Professor rank. A Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely aligned field is required. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is desirable but not required. Evidence of strong scholarship, research, teaching and external funding is required and experience in academic leadership is desirable.
The successful candidate will contribute to the Department’s Vecellio Construction Engineering and Management Program (VCEMP), including pursuit of collaborative and transdisciplinary research opportunities. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to scholarly work, sponsored research, undergraduate instruction, and specialized graduate education. Candidates are expected to have a nationally recognized record of research and scholarship that has focused on issues of national or global significance in the built environment. The successful applicant will also be encouraged to pursue opportunities to participate in multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary 21st-century global challenges, such as intelligent infrastructure, smart design and construction or sustainable development. The candidate must be able to contribute to the instructional mission, including teaching practice-oriented courses. VCEMP has excellent facilities to support its research, education and outreach initiatives.
A candidate appointed to the Vecellio Professorship will be responsible for stewardship and management of the VCEMP Vecellio Endowment. This gift provides funding for undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, an annual distinguished lecture series, and the named Vecellio professorship. The CEE Department is home to 51 tenure-track faculty members, including several early career awardees, holders of endowed professorships, and National Academy members, as well as approximately 350 full-time graduate students and 625 undergraduate students. The Via Endowment allows the CEE department to offer a significant amount of scholarships and fellowships to qualified students.
