NOTICE OF VACANCY
Faculty Positions in Structural Engineering, Sustainable Design & Engineering, and Transportation Engineering
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), within the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, at Washington State University (WSU) is seeking highly motivated candidates for three (3) permanent, full-time academic year, tenure-track faculty positions at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on qualifications. It is anticipated that the successful candidate(s) will begin the appointment on August 16, 2022.
Candidates must have expertise in structural design and engineering (two positions), and in transportation engineering (one position), with an emphasis on sustainability, infrastructure resiliency, or AI / ML. All positions are located at WSU Pullman, WA campus. Candidates should be able to work at a granular level, as well as a systems level. Candidates with the ability to work within their discipline and across multiple disciplines collaboratively will be preferred. The ability to collaborate in teaching and on projects in soil-structure interaction, sustainable practices in construction, or big data applications in civil engineering will be given preference. AI, VR, and automated off-site construction interests will facilitate productive linkages with WSU’s School of Design and Construction, and therefore are considered favourably.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, within the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, at Washington State University in Pullman, WA as part of its strategic initiative on Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure Systems seeks applicants for three tenure-track faculty positions as Assistant or Associate Professors in the areas of Structures, Materials, Sustainability, and Transportation Engineering. A successful candidate for the Transportation Engineering faculty position must have expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Big traffic data analytics using AI or machine learning to adapt to self-driving vehicles
- Modeling and simulation of large-scale complex and interconnected systems
- Freight logistics and supply chain systems
- Multimodal mobility or traffic safety, especially for underserved communities
- Resiliency of large-scale networked infrastructure and cyber-physical systems
A successful candidate for the Structural Engineering faculty positions must have expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Sustainable methods of construction, such as design and engineering hybrid structures that incorporate varying materials based on their strengths (for example, mass timber with steel or concrete reinforcing members) and energy efficient building design and construction
- Resilient multi-hazard structural design, wind engineering, and computational modeling
- Assessment and mitigation of infrastructure problems related to climate change, natural hazards, geohazards, and soil-structure interaction
- Data-driven decision-making for sustainability goals (environment, corporate responsibility, health & safety) towards the bigger vision of smart cities and building design and materials
The ideal candidate should demonstrate high-quality research and have a commitment to teaching excellence. Individuals with demonstrated abilities to collaborate in large projects, especially across disciplines, are highly encouraged to apply. Abilities to teach and mentor a diverse student body, supervise graduate students, and enhance the curriculum in the areas of structural, material, and transportation engineering are desired. An ability to teach core undergraduate fundamental courses in structures, structural analysis, structural design and modeling, or intelligent transportation is desired. A culture of interdisciplinary research with a diverse group of faculty and students is valued, and the candidate will be encouraged to contribute to existing research strengths within the program and across the university in synergistic areas, such as within the Composite Materials & Engineering Center (www.cmec.wsu.edu), the School of Design + Construction (https://sdc.wsu.edu/) and the National UTC TriDurLE (https://TriDurLE.wsu.edu/).
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Suitable candidates must have:
- An earned doctoral degree in Civil or Architectural engineering or a closely related field at the start of the appointment.
- Ability to develop an externally funded research program leading to national recognition, teach courses pertaining to structural or transportation engineering, and contribute to departmental service.
- Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated commitment to collaborate with diverse internal and external groups.
- Additionally, candidates for the Associate Professor level must have a proven track record in scholarship, grantsmanship, and teaching.
The following are preferred qualifications:
- M.S. degree in Civil Engineering
- Strong records of scholarship, teaching, and professional service
- A demonstrated background in multiple targeted areas mentioned above
- Ability to demonstrate the potential for meeting the expectations through activities such as journal publications, professional conference presentations, teaching experience, outreach, and related activities
- Willingness to attain Professional Engineering licensure within 5 years of starting the appointment
