Description
 
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions at the level of Assistant Professor. For each position, we seek an early career faculty member in communication systems, digital signal processing, and wireless networking, ideally starting in Spring semester 2023. Fall 2023 start will also be considered. Tenure-track faculty members are expected to engage in teaching, research, and service activities.

 

Who We Are: 

The ECE Department at UCCS is relatively small in size; thus, all the tenure-track faculty in the department are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate classes, while simultaneously developing an individual program of research. The College of Engineering and Applied Science (EAS) at UCCS offers degrees at the bachelors, masters, and doctoral levels. The Microelectronics Research Laboratory (MRL) of the ECE Department has a well-equipped 4000 sq. ft. class-100 clean room, with device processing and characterization facilities. The Microwave Measurements Laboratory is able to test EMI from high-power circuits. The High-Capacity Battery Research Laboratory has facilities to test and characterize cells, modules, and battery packs for hybrid and electric vehicles. The undergraduate communications laboratory has recently been upgraded with new 6.5 GHz FieldFox spectrum/network analyzers and waveform generators to augment the wideband digital oscilloscopes.

Job Duties

Teaching:

These faculty positions will cover graduate and undergraduate courses in the area of circuits and systems, signal processing, and communication systems. Specific courses include ECE2610: Signals and Systems, ECE 2205/3205: Circuits and Systems I and II, ECE 3610: Engineering Probability and Statistics, ECE 4670: Communication Systems Laboratory, ECE 4625(5625)/4630(5630) Communication Systems I and II, ECE 4650/5650 Modern Digital Signal Processing (DSP), and ECE5685 Wireless Networking and Space communications. In addition, new courses may be developed. Both the positions will introduce new courses depending on curriculum requirements and hands on laboratory development. Both the positions will also be expected to run hands-on communication systems and DSP teaching labs.

Research:

These faculty positions will be expected to pursue and attract external funding for their research, maintain a strong and regular publication record, as well as interface their research with the department’s existing strengths in microelectronic circuits, VLSI design, computers, communications/signal processing, and controls.    

Service:

All tenure track faculty are expected to engage in service activities to support the University, city, state, region, nation and/or professional associations.

Work Location: Primarily on-site

Remote work will be available for emergency events. This will be offered based on the emergency and allowance will come from leadership and the guidelines provided at the time of the emergency.

This position has been determined to be exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

 

What We Offer:

Salary Range: Generally starting at $92,000 - $96,500 per academic year

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. The University of Colorado Colorado Springs offers excellent benefits, some of which include:

Tentative Search Timeline:

  • Priority will be given to applications submitted by September 30, 2022. However, this posting will remain open until filled.
  • The potential dates for interviews with the search committee will be the weeks of October 17 and 24, 2022.
  • The potential dates for interviews with the supervisor and appointing authority will be the week of November 14, 2022.
  • The potential employee start date is January 9, 2023 or August 14, 2023.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

1) A Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field; conferred by date of appointment

2) Specific expertise in communication systems, wireless networks, and digital signal processing obtained through, the area of research (PhD dissertation), educational history (courses taken), or teaching records (courses taught) in all three areas.

3) At least 4 months of teaching experience in an academic setting as a teaching assistant, instructor of record, or the equivalent, teaching students from freshman through senior/graduate technical elective levels in signals and systems, communications theory and practice, digital signal processing, wireless networking related course work, or closely related engineering topics.

4) Experience in designing and/or teaching at least one hands-on lab in any one of these areas, as a teaching assistant, instructor of record, or the equivalent.  

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk. Employee is occasionally required to have long periods of sitting, moderate bending, moderate energy requirements, and fine motor skills.The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
