Aalto University is where science and art meet technology and business. We shape a sustainable future by making research breakthroughs in and across our disciplines, sparking the game changers of tomorrow and creating novel solutions to major global challenges. Our community is made up of 12 000 students, 400 professors and close to 4 000 other faculty and staff working on our dynamic campus in Espoo, Greater Helsinki, Finland. Diversity is part of who we are, and we actively work to ensure our community’s diversity and inclusiveness. This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.

Aalto University’s School of Chemical Engineering, Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems, invites applications for

Tenure track or tenured professor in Bioprocess Engineering

The position is to be filled at any level of the Aalto University tenure track system (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor). The position is full-time and depending on the positioning on the tenure track, either on fixed or permanent term.

Bioprocess engineering is a central part of industrial biotechnology. Microbe-based processes are used for utilization of feedstocks for conversion to value-added chemicals, fuels, food, active proteins, or bio-based materials. Future challenges will be on how to diversify feedstocks so that the overall efficiency of raw materials usage is improved. Future bioreactors and processes must in a holistic way take into account the full utilization of side streams and provide solutions that minimize overall environmental impact. In this the capability to genetically engineer organisms is central. Bioprocess engineering solves problems related to the full conversion sequence from feedstocks to bioreactor performance to product recovery and downstream processing in an economically viable way. For this, both a thorough understanding of bioreactor design and performance  as well as unit operations related to downstream processing are necessary.

As a professor at the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems you will establish and lead your own research group. You will be responsible for education in the field of bioprocess engineering at BSc, MSc, and doctoral level.

Scientific Environment
The department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (BIO2) (, one of the three departments in the School of Chemical Engineering at Aalto University, has an internationally leading reputation in basic and applied research for the conversion of natural resources to chemicals and advanced materials. It is one of the leading European research and higher education institutions in the field of sustainable chemistry and engineering for the utilization of renewable resources. BIO2 aims to contribute to the development of novel solutions to move towards sustainable primary production and processing systems that can produce materials with fewer inputs, less environmental impact and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. At the BIO2 department you will have numerous opportunities to link both feedstocks and processing environments to the utilization and products of lignocellulose and related industry. Within bioscience, the department has research in bioprocess engineering, molecular biotechnology, microbial physiology, enzyme technology, metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, biomolecular, and bio-hybrid materials.

We are looking for applicants who have:
  • a doctoral degree in bioprocess engineering, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or another related field
  • a research background supporting the topic of bioprocess engineering
  • relevant teaching experience
  • a strong publication record
  • experience in international collaborations and projects
  • documented experience in obtaining research funding

Applicants with an industrial background in addition to a scientific career are very welcome. The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research work, teaching and academic leadership and activity in the scientific community.

What we offer
We offer a research-oriented environment, with highly functional laboratories and research infrastructure ( The research groups in related fields in biosciences, biorefineries, advanced sustainable materials, lignocellulosics, chemical engineering, and (bio)chemical plant design form a collaborative environment that supports the development of bioprocesses and provides beneficial interactions and common research topics.

We offer the possibility to work within a well-resourced learning community where the students are rigorously selected and highly motivated. This results in an unusually interactive and intellectually challenging atmosphere.

Aalto University provides its employees with occupational health care services and retirement benefits. Finland is a healthy and safe living environment, offering many excellent state-subsidized services including affordable day care, free schools and universities, which are consistently ranked among the best in the world. The salary is determined based on applicant's experience and qualifications. Activities of the department are located in the Otaniemi campus of Aalto University in Espoo (Helsinki metropolitan area).

Tenure track in Aalto University
The position will be placed on the Aalto University Tenure Track. Individuals on the tenure track have the possibility to advance in their career through regular performance assessments, which take into account their merits in all areas of their scope of duty. Launched only in 2010, the tenure track has attracted a wide range of international applicants, giving Aalto University the possibility of recruiting top experts and young talents to join the Aalto University community.

Throughout their careers, those in the academic tenure track system are expected to exercise and guide scientific research, to provide related higher academic education, to follow the advances of their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field. About Finland
Finland is a great place for living with or without family - it is a safe, politically stable and well-organized Nordic society. Finland is consistently ranked high in quality of life and was just listed again as the happiest country in the world: For more information about living in Finland:,

Finland is an R&D oriented high-tech society committed to increase annual R&D input to 4% of GDP. Finland has been the forerunner in the development and production of industrial enzymes and within forest biotechnology. In addition to these major commercial established activities, novel industrial bioprocesses are currently being developed e.g. within cellular food, circular economy and fuel compounds in research organisations and private companies. This results in continuing need for bioprocess professionals and enables industry related projects.

Aalto University has been awarded with HR Excellence in Research quality label in European Commission, guaranteeing that we adhere to top quality HR practices in both recruitment and employment relations.

We believe that people from diverse backgrounds can together reach the best results. Diversity is part of who we are: for example, over 40% of our academic faculty comes from outside Finland. We warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds, especially minorities, to apply, as we want to ensure our community’s diversity and inclusiveness in the future as well.
